A message from the Board Chairman

October, 2016

By Jeff Walla, Board Chair

The First Tee of New Hampshire has much to celebrate as you will see in this edition of our newsletter.  We have impacted many more youth in New Hampshire with our programs this season and have broadened our reach to new programming, after school, and youth development locations throughout the state.  I had the pleasure to participate in a fundraiser for the Claremont location, better known locally as “Dody’s Kids” for years, on a spectacular day at the Claremont Country Club.  Marie Allen, the lead volunteer of Dody’s Kids and coach and devoted fan of the Dody Belski, Brian Stowell, hosted the day of golf raising money so that all 50 children in the program will participate for free.  In a unique set up in the inaugural year as a First Tee program, they were able to work with another program location, Fore-U Golf in West Lebanon as well as Claremont Country Club, to put a robust program together this year focused almost exclusively on RESPECT, one of our nine core values.  Marie Allen spoke to the crowd before the fundraiser about the change she has seen in the kids during the program this summer around RESPECT.  We were fortunate to have Jim Blalock, our Lead Coach, participate every week in Claremont with Marie, the other volunteers, and the children to kick off this first year as a First Tee location.  Enjoy the rest of the newsletter and the many, many things we have to be proud of as a chapter this season.  Thanks to all of our parents, volunteers, staff, financial supporters, Board and Advisory Council members for a wonderful program season.

PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lauren’s Nature Valley First Tee Open Pebble Beach Experience

The experience was definitely breathtaking and I definitely made memories that I will never forget. I met so many great people from chapters all over the country. The golf courses were both in great condition and both challenged my golf game very much. Poppy Hills was a very different style golf course than the ones in New England, the greens were firm and fast and so were the fairways. It required a great amount of creativity on the approach shots. My favorite course of the two was definitely Pebble Beach because it has so much history and the views were astonishing. My favorite hole is the 7th at Pebble Beach because I think it is the prettiest hole on the course. In the practice round we saw dolphins and sea lions in the water while we were waiting on the tee. This is also a special hole for me because it was one of the two birdies that I made in the competition. I hit a 60 degree wedge to about 5 feet and rolled in the putt for a birdie that I will never forget. My two favorite special events that I got to go to were the Champions dinner when Andy Grammar performed. That was very special. The other event that I enjoyed was the Legends and Leaders banquet. Hearing inspirational quotes and advice from people that are business leaders or top in their expertise was very interesting and they found cool and interesting ways of integrating different core values into experiences that they have had. My favorite day by far was Saturday the 17th when I played my 2nd round of the tournament at Pebble Beach with Jeff Maggert then finished and had a little lunch with Loren Roberts, one of my host parents and Jim. Then going to play Monterrey Peninsula- shore course with my host parent and his amateur partner that are both members there and Jim got to play too. It was an experience that wouldn't have happened without my host parent and I thank him very much for making a day that would have already been unforgettable even more special. I had been working towards this goal of making it into the First Tee Open since I was 9. I have to thank the First Tee of New Hampshire for helping me make this dream a reality.

Jim Blalock’s Observations from Pebble Beach

Jim has been Lauren Thibodeau’s First Tee Coach since she was 6 years old.  He recently accompanied her to The Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and was able to witness firsthand how the lessons Lauren has learned from The First Tee have helped Lauren become the person she has become today.

Lauren’s PGA partner was Jeff Maggert.  They tied for 21st place, -6 for 2 rounds best ball and just missed the opportunity to compete in the final round.  This however, is only part of her experience.  Lauren demonstrated what she had learned in her 10 years of participation at The First Tee of New Hampshire throughout her time at Pebble Beach.  She displayed perseverance by overcoming a disappointing beginning and impressing her playing partners with her great positive attitude and personality.  She used her TFTNH communication skills in conversations with everyone she met showing her unique personality and letting them know she is a fun-loving, respectful, intelligent, thoughtful and talented young lady who could carry on a thoughtful conversation with both celebrities and other participants of all ages.

At the conclusion of a very busy week, with hundreds of First Tee kids from nearby chapters surrounding her, Lauren realized that she had become not only a First Tee player but a role model and a mentor and is looking forward to coming back to New Hampshire and expanding her role as such.  She knows that  her success on and off the golf course is an example for all who participate in The First Tee program and she is eager to share that with everyone.
