spotlight: sundown cleaners

Sundown Cleaners is one of Mount Vernon Triangle’s legacy retailers, having operated for more than 32 years on the ground floor of Museum Square apartments at 401 K Street before recently moving just down the street to Carmel Plaza at 200 K. Following military service in South Korea’s air force, owner Stephen Han started his civilian career as a commercial airline mechanic—first for Korean Airways in South Korea, then for Iran Airlines in Tehran—before opening his first dry cleaning business with no experience. Seven years later, he immigrated to the United States and opened Sundown Cleaners in Mount Vernon Triangle at a time when there were far fewer surrounding residents and businesses. mvt cid testifies at dc council roundtable on importance of bids/cids

On Friday, October 14, MVT CID President & CEO Kenyattah Robinson testified before a DC Council roundtable on business improvement districts’ (BIDs) important role in supporting local business development. The MVT CID was the first BID to include residential properties in its tax structure, which is reflected in the fact that we call ourselves a “community improvement district” (CID). Kenyattah’s testimony before the newly created Subcommittee on Local Business Development and Utilities, chaired by Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, detailed the assistance that the MVT CID provides in supporting local business development by creating an environment that encourages local business development; supporting the attraction and retention of office users and retail tenants; and giving great focus and attention to the ongoing sustainment of our neighborhood including providing daily clean and safe services. For a copy of Kenyattah’s testimony, please email info@mvtcid.org.
support a clean and safe mvt at central union mission's "heart and sole" fundraiser on thursday, october 27

None of the MVT CID’s Clean Team Ambassadors’ work to keep our community clean and safe would be possible without Central Union Mission’s “Ready to Work” job training program, which has helped to stabilize and transform the lives of these formerly homeless men and enables them to live productive, independent lives. A great way for you to support MVT CID’s clean and safe efforts is by attending Central Union Mission’s HeART & Sole fundraiser—a special evening of food and fun that brings life and hope to many who struggle in our city. The event will be held Thursday, October 27 from 7-10 pm at Union Market’s Dock5 located at 1309 5th Street NE. Central Union Mission’s largest and most prominent fundraising event, HeART & Sole will feature trendy tastings from dozens of local chefs as well as gourmet selections from the Mission’s training collaboration with DC Central Kitchen and the Ready2Cook program Mission Muffins. Talented chefs and their celebrity “sous chefs” will face off in a creative cooking competition using both exotic ingredients and everyday staples from the Mission’s food pantry. You can also enjoy a signature cocktail and live music while browsing the silent auction and hanging out at the social media lounge meeting local celebrities and making new friends. Click here to learn how you can join more than 500 of Central Union Mission’s most loyal supporters at this year’s HeART & Sole event to further support these incredible men in their effort to live productive, independent lives.
