Crow Wood 2016 Prizegiving

A wonderful evening was held on Friday night as Crow Wood Golf Club celebrated it's annual awards ceremony in front of over 80 members.

Jim Murphy compered an evening that raised £565 on behalf of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice as a result of our traditional charity raffle (ably organised by Dougie Martin and Frank Davidson ... Thanks guys). Thank you for all the donations of prizes that allowed this to happen, including Sam Torrance's donation of a book and glove.

George McNeill provided the after dinner hilarity, delivered in a manner thought to be one of the best the club has witnessed for many a year, whilst John Scott delivered the prize quiz, won this year by Ladies Captain Allison Allan.

Thanks to Mark the Magician, for getting the evening started, and also to Sharyn and her bar staff, and Margaret and the catering team for ensuring the evening went without a hitch.

The biggest congratulations goes to all the winners, and to the many more entrants that made this years competition so exiting, and therefore worthwhile in celebrating.

And the biggest cheer, as always is reserved for our 2016 Club Champions, Debra Kelly and Craig Taylor. Very few people reach that level in the club, so they should feel very proud of their achievements, and get to see their name of the Champion Boards for many years

So, as we take a breather for the winter, and think about starting it all again next spring, we look forward to seeing you at next years event.

Course News

At the last committee meeting, it was decided the the fairways would be taken out of play on Monday 31st October. (in line with the clocks changing). All play should either be off mats (soon to be available from Ian in the Pro-Shop) or by moving your ball to the first cut at either side of the fairway.

As the colder, wetter months set in, we urge all players to be as considerate to the course as possible, not only to preserve it through the winter, but to give it the best possible start next year.

There is no doubt the course will get wetter and heavier, but it is the intent that we keep the full course open as much as possible, including greens, but we look for everyone to do their bit, including-

Repair all pitch marks on the greens.
Replace all divots
Use winter wheels on all electric trolleys
Don't take trolleys, or walk on areas that are obviously muddy, worn, or in need of repair, Walk round those areas to prevent further damage.
Don't take trolleys on the closely mown areas around the greens that can be easily damaged.
Ride on buggies are only to be used by members in possession of a blue disability badge.

The Course maintenance autumn works are now well under way, with all greens having been cored and sanded, with further drainage and bunkers upgrades aiming to continue right through the winter. Greenskeeper, James Kelly, is pictured here on last weeks chainsaw operation and safety course as part of the clubs investment.

Juniors

One of the few downsides of the year is the lack of progress on the Juniors side of the club.

It is the desire of the club to have an active and thriving Junior membership with regular competitions and team matches, to allow our youngsters to develop their golf in a safe and welcoming environment.

Unfortunately we need a number of members to volunteer their time, to help organise and run such events, therefore we are looking for a sub group of three or four members to share the load.

If you can offer some time (and enthusiasm), and would like to help the future competition winners, then please let Margaret, Club Secretary know on 0141 779 4954

Due to a late cancellation from some of the acts, the club has no choice to cancel this event, scheduled for 19th November. We apologise for any inconvenience to those who had purchased tickets.

Do you know the rules?

Question - in making a practice swing near your ball, a piece of a divot lands on the ball and causes it to move. What is the ruling?

There is no penalty and the ball must be replaced
You incur a penalty of one stroke and must replace the ball
You incur a penalty of one stroke and must play the ball as it lies

Last weeks answer is- 1) and 2)

1) Relief form GUR (in this case the bunker) is optional unless a local rule states that it is mandatory, so you "may" opt to take relief.
2) If you do take relief from the bunker, then it is the nearest point of full relief, one club length, no nearer the hole. (but the bunker doesn't have to between you and the hole)
