LETTUCE ALERT
The Salinas valley is experiencing multiple issues with lettuce, romaine and all leaf items. Sclerotinia is becoming an issue in the growing areas of Salinas and all suppliers are having to deal with. These crops are more susceptible to disease pressure in the fall due to the ground being a little tired and on their last crop rotation. Build up of pathogens in the soil due to previous crops along with recent rain and moisture provide the opportunity for these pathogens to thrive. Other issues include rusting and brown spotting, discolored ribs, mildew, and lightweights are some of the other issues. Huron lettuce has had slight misshapen heads as well as light insect damage but overall, the quality is better. Below are some pictures of lettuce that had been reported upon arrival from product harvested in the Salinas valley.
