Upcoming Workshops
Machine Learning with H2O in R & Python
Dr. Erin LeDell of H2O.ai will be at the D-Lab on Monday and Friday to present workshops on machine learning using the H2O and H2OEnsemble, an open source distributed machine learning platform designed for big data. The Monday workshop will cover H2O in R while the Friday workshop will demo its use in Python. Register for the R workshop or the Python workshop or both! 
Web Scraping in Python: Part 1 of 2
There's still time to register for the second iteration of our popular two part series is offered on November 2 & 9th. The workshop will demonstrate how to use Google Dev Tools, Selenium and the Python package Beautiful Soup to collect data via web scraping. There with ample opportunity to practice. Register here!

Interactive Maps in R with ggMap + Leaflet
Come learn how to turn your data into beautiful maps using R! We will begin by making some static maps before discussing how to use Leaflet, one of the most popular libraries for creating web maps. We’ll cover the entire workflow from raw data to interactive map all within R, so your analysis and mapping are entirely reproducible. Register here!

Creating Maps in R
Interested in working with geographic data in R? This workshop will introduce methods and libraries for mapping spatial data in R. We will briefly cover some of the basics of spatial data types and methods for importing spatial data. Note that this workshop will be co-hosted with the GIF and located in 124 Mulford. Register here!

World Bank Big Data Innovation Challenge
This is a global call to find big data solutions that address issues pertaining to two critical challenge areas: food security & nutrition and forestry & watersheds. This is open to individuals, students and entrepreneurs as well as start-ups, university labs, private companies, nonprofits and public sector agencies legally established in member countries of the World Bank Group. The deadline is November 9th and you can apply online here.

Kenly Brown is currently a doctoral student in the Department of African American Studies.  Her research examines how perceptions of Black girls and exclusionary forms of discipline (like suspension and expulsion) sanctioned against them are informed by the intersectionality of race, gender, and class.  Kenly graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. in Sociology and minor in Political Science and earned an M.A.
