Exploring Can Lead To Working Happy

Action is revered in our current work culture. Goals, measures, productivity and identified destinations are emphasized. These elements all matter. However, where is the open space?

We don’t know everything. Exploring lets us discover new things. As we explore, we grow – from new experiences, new environments and meeting new people.

When an artist creates, they start with a blank canvas. When an adventurer discovers, there is often no map. Exploring how you can work happy is like that. You start off on an adventure without a set destination. What you do is up to you. The key is to focus on what makes you happy. Here are some ways you can explore:

  • Spend some time researching professions that intrigue you
  • Talk with others who are doing things you may want to do
  • Create a vision board of a happy work life for you
  • Find ways, through volunteering or other means, to spend a day doing work that you are attracted to
  • Look at what makes you happy in your personal life. How can that translate into a profession?

When you explore, you open a range of possibilities. Ways to work happy are out there waiting for you. You just have to find them.

What's Up For You?

We love answering your questions on your journey to working happy!

Q: I am working for a person who has a brusque method of communication. She tends to make broad, critical statements about
her team, without paying attention to the details of what is actually occurring. It can be unsettling for me and I have not been able to stand my ground with her, at times. I have to find a way to deal with her criticisms, stay centered and be able to respond to her with strength and confidence.  Do you have any advice, Ann?

A: This is not easy! Your aim is perfect – to respond with strength and confidence. When someone communicates in this way, it is like rapid-fire and can easily set others off balance. Sometimes, that is the aim – to go on the offensive. Or, it is caused by a lack of emotional intelligence. That said, how can you make the best of your communication with this person?

One suggestion is to not let her put you on the defensive with her bluster. It may take a moment to regain center, but do that before you respond to her. Pause before you say anything. Spend a little time silently observing the effect her communication has on others. Then turn to yourself. How can you best communicate with her from a place of strength and confidence?

Once you have observed, practice. It is really the most effective way to make a change. Try things out and see what works. Good luck.

Tips
  • Everyone needs a well within to draw strength from.
  • To work effectively in teams, you need to engage all kinds of personalities. See my blog post, Do You Work With Peacocks?
  • If someone can get inside your head and confuse you, you are not holding your power.
Time Wheel
Time is finite, but often we act as if it is infinite and we can cram two days worth of work into one day. Being realistic about the time you have is a clear path to working happy.

I created a wheel you can use to determine how you are using the time you have each day.  Download it here.
