Policy Analysis on Pakistan
The urgent need to create jobs through sustainable industry

1.5 million young people enter Pakistan's labour force every year, and there will need to be available jobs to match. Where will those jobs come from? CDPR Affiliate Nazish Afraz, an economist and teaching fellow at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), argues in DAWN that Pakistan should look to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 9 - which emphasises resilient infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialization and innovation - by spurring job creation in the manufacturing sector to prevent an unemployment crisis.

Lahore Policy Exchange
Presents

Legal Obstacles to Economic Development

The Consortium for Development Policy Research is excited to announce the second of its event series, the Lahore Policy Exchange, titled "Legal Obstacles to Economic Development", to be held on 4th November from 2:30-4:00 PM.

Sustainable, inclusive economic development cannot happen without an accommodating system of law, courts and legal protections accessible to citizens. Pakistan faces major challenges on all three accounts, from failures in the courts to managing cases, to the law being used as instrument to protect vested interests.

At this week's event, two important topics that fall under this theme will be addressed by our speakers, Feisal Naqvi and Salman Akram Raja

Feisal Naqvi, a lawyer and columnist, will discuss why courts are overwhelmed with cases involving land disputes, preventing their ability to hear more important cases.

Salman Akram Raja, an advocate of the Supreme Court, will discuss whether fundamental rights to property and business enterprise have empowered marginalized groups or entrenched the interests of privilege

To attend, please RSVP to admin@cdpr.org.pk by Wednesday, 2nd November. Limited seats are available!

About CDPR
In Pakistan, policy decisions and public discourse are often uninformed by available research. The Consortium for Development Policy Research (CDPR) bridges this gap by communicating cutting-edge, evidence-based research on development issues in Pakistan to an audience of policymakers, students, the media and the wider public. With support from the International Growth Centre (IGC), CDPR disseminates policy briefs, hosts events, engages with the media and produces digital content to make topics in development research such as economic growth, energy, education, health and governance intelligible to both decision makers and the public.
