WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

The Wild in Idaho

The Wild 12U/14U House team traveled to Lewiston, Idaho this past weekend to participate in a two game exhibition invitational with the Moscow Polar Bears. The Wild played aggressively as they attacked for the puck.

Two girls played in net for their first time and did a great job. The Polar Bears may have won both games (final scores 6-8 and 3-5), but the Wild made them work and played with great heart.

Our gracious hosts, the Polar Bears, provided dinner after Friday's game and invited us to a free skate. The girls enjoyed making new friends and experiencing a road trip, and the parents loved the excitement of watching the girls play their best games so far this season.  GO WILD!!

The Experts’ Edge

Sleep as a Performance Enhancer

It’s about time we go back to basics and take into consideration something we do for 1/3 of our lives (i.e. sleep!) as having serious potential for elevating our athletic performance and well-being.

Don’t get me wrong, the foods we eat, the quality of water we drink and air we breathe, the community we surround ourselves with, and the exercises we do are all instrumental in the development of a highly functioning athlete whose risk of injury is minimized.

However, none of these variables are as freely and readily influenced as sleep. If you are unsure of its importance, simply refrain from sleeping for one night and see how you feel the next day.

Ask WWFHA

What’s the difference between the blue pucks and the black pucks?

There's a healthy dose of sport science to support using age-appropriate dimensions and equipment.

When parents ask Joe Bonnett about 8U kids using blue pucks, his explanation involves a different sport entirely: cricket. There’s a video he saw awhile back featuring adults attempting to use equipment far heavier than the standard bat and ball. Not surprisingly, the participants could hardly play the game.

Bonnett, a regional manager for USA Hockey’s American Development Model, says it best demonstrates why children between 5 and 8 years old shouldn’t use the standard 6-ounce black puck. Instead, they should embrace the 4-ounce blue puck the ADM has adopted for 8U programs.

“Hockey traditionally hasn’t been known to do age-appropriate, kid-specific modifications,” Bonnett said. “But consider other sports. Using a smaller soccer ball has always been considered normal. Using a smaller basketball hoop is normal, a smaller basketball, a lighter baseball bat and T-ball. All of that is kind of ingrained in our society, and USA Hockey just introduced hockey’s version of that.”
