Reports from Pakistan: Tracing the challenges facing religious minorities

Religious minorities in Pakistan face severe discrimination and persecution, many cases of which go unreported, and often with lack of adequate avenues for redress, says Minority Rights Group International (MRG) in a new online resource pack.

Groups such as Hindus, Christians, and Ahmadis, as well as sectarian minorities such as Shi’a, face multiple challenges, including acute levels of discrimination and insecurity.

State of the World's Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2016

The unique cultures of minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide – spanning a wide variety of customs and practices – are under threat. This year’s edition of State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples highlights the impact of land dispossession, forced assimilation and other forms of discrimination on the most fundamental aspects of their identity, including language, art, traditional knowledge and spirituality.

Up the Hills; Down the Valley – a film about indigenous women living with HIV in Vietnam 

Directed by Phuong Thao Tran. Produced by MRG, Medical Committee Netherlands – Vietnam and Soul Rebel Films

Length: 18 minutes. Language: Vietnamese (English subtitles).

La and Tương, two indigenous women of Tai ethnicity from a mountainous area in the northwest of Vietnam, are living with HIV. The film documents their story – from the brink of death after infection by their drug-addicted husbands, through to their blossoming, with the encouragement of a local support group, as strong, independent women who earn a living and support their families. Shaheedo Tum Kahan Ho - a film about Pakistan's Hazara

Shaheedo Tum Kahan Ho gives an account of the targeted killings of members of the Shi’a Hazara community in Pakistan, highlighting how they face discrimination in their everyday lives, while security concerns and death threats make routine activities like going to school or the market a potential hazard. 'Noun' - a film about the current challenges facing Iraqi Christians

Directed by Aida Schlaepfer, commissioned and produced by MRG & da Production

Duration: 24 minutes. Language: Arabic (English subtitles).

The film “Noun” depicts the suffering of Christian Iraqis - their marginalisation, persecution, torture, and murder - culminating in their forced displacement from their homes in northern Iraq, and how this systematic displacement, which began at the turn of the 20th Century, continues to this day.
