A Dinner and talk featuring Gabby Holcomb, Sandia National Labs
5:30 PM, UNM Research Park, 800 Bradbury Dr. SE, ABQ

When you think of counterfeit, you often think of money or fake hand bags. The problem is that the counterfeiting problem is so much more. Counterfeiting impacts each and every consumer as they go to buy products for their homes, families, work, etc. Counterfeit products are not only “fake” items that seem to bring cheap name brands to those who normally could not afford them, counterfeits actually can kill. Gabby will explore the impact and scope of the problem, share real life examples, and discuss how you can protect yourself from these types of items.

DataONE Webinar Series: Analyzing, interpreting, and implementing data management plans

There continues to be a need for data management services that effectively support the needs of researchers. One key area of growth for academic libraries is serving as active collaborators with faculty and researchers as part of the research process. Recognizing this need for additional data management structures, DataONE was an early partner in a grassroots effort (along with seven other institutions) to develop the DMPTool, starting in January 2011. LECTURE: Additive Manufacturing—A new world of opportunities and technical challenges
Chama River Brewing Co., ABQ

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is creating entirely new design and manufacturing possibilities never before available with traditional manufacturing methods. While there are true opportunities in such technology, there is also legitimate concern that it may have been oversold in some cases. This presentation will offer a realistic overview of Additive Manufacturing, including relative advantages and limitations, with the goal of helping you to separate hype from reality. Some interesting applications of AM and some important materials science challenges will be discussed. The group will gather at 5:30 pm for a social period, dinner is ordered at 6:00pm, and the talk will begin at 7:00 pm. Cost: $30/person and $15/person for students. Please RSVP before noon on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 to Pylin Sarobol at psarobo@sandia.gov. Please, indicate any dietary restrictions.
