October 2016 Newsletter
Rei Hotoda, Conductor
It has been a very busy fall indeed on my part. In the first few weeks in October I conducted over 20 education concerts for nearly 4,000 students and teachers in 10 different cities throughout Utah. Then, I made my successful debut with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and conducted the USO's ever-popular Halloween concert, which had me presiding over the second largest costume contest in Utah!

Looking towards November: Lots of covering for Thierry Fischer, conducting the USO in a performance of Brahms' Symphony No 1 out in the community and a return guest conducting appearance with the Thunder Bay Symphony in Ontario.
Another Debut, Another Standing Ovation
Debut With the Toledo Symphony Orchestra

On October 20 and 21 I made my guest conducting debut with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. The musicians of the orchestra were so engaged and it showed in the way the music was received by the audience. The repertoire included Khachaturian’s Adagio from Spartacus, Suite No. 2; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”; Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919); Debussy's Afternoon of the Faun; Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice; and Verdi's Triumphant March from Aida. Bravo to the Toledo Symphony Orchestra for a job well done.
From Zion to Ephraim
USO Education Concert Tour

Many times I’m asked what a conductor of today has to do and the answer is simple: everything. From conducting and programing to talking with community members to engaging with the board to education concerts to meeting with potential donors. We do it all. For two weeks in October I took members of the USO on a successful education tour throughout 10 different cities in Utah. We performed the works of Bach, Grieg, Mozart, Schubert and Ravel for more than 4,000 students and teachers. The audiences were awesome.
Welcome Return Ahead
Thunder Bay Symphony and Brahms with the USO

On November 26, I will return to the Thunder Bay Symphony to lead the orchestra in a program that features Respighi’s Trittico botticelliano; Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E flat major, with Jens Lindemann as soloist; Gilliland’s Dreaming of the Masters III; and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4. I will also take the USO to St. George, UT, for a performance of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor as well as Prokofiev’s Suite from Lieutenant Kijé and his Concerto No. 2 in G minor for Violin and Orchestra, with Madeline Adkins, the USO's new concertmaster, as soloist.
Happy Halloween from the USO
Music from the High Seas

Every year around this time the USO holds its annual Halloween concert. This year I was decked out in a stunningly elaborate pirate costume and led the crew on a journey through the works by Britten, Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov, among others. The icing on the cake: presiding over Utah’s second largest costume contest. The orchestra played valiantly--and takes its costume wearing very seriously--and the concert put Utah's community creativity on display.
