The Newsletter for Club Children's Officers                      Issue 9
Our projects are steaming ahead now the season is back in full swing.  We have an update on our successful CYA, and we are very much looking forward to hearing about what young people are doing this year.  We are moving ahead with our Club Captains in Youth Sport project, more to come in the next newsletter when we will be asking about running workshops – think on this for next time.  Meanwhile all CCOs should try to get to one of the CCO forums in each of the regions (dates at the end) – this is your opportunity to meet each other and me!

YOUTH CONGRESS

Swim Ireland held their very first Youth Congress this October 2016. Youth Congress was really motivating for us and we learned a lot from the young people that attended. We asked them the question:

What do young people want from their parents?
Their answers included:
  • Understanding of the sport
  • Help to prepare for competitions
  • Financial support
  • Motivation/Support
  • Do not try to be my coach, be my parent
  • Bring me training
  • Confidence
  • Equipment
  • Engage with my club
  • Encouragement

This is interesting given we have just celebrated Parent in Sport week highlighting the same messages!

We also had a moving debate on three topics – we will give the feedback over the next couple of newsletters, but perhaps you would like to try one in your own club:

Statement: "The Coach should choose the Club Captains."
Ask your squads for their views, do they
AGREE or DISAGREE, we would be really please to get their responses – this will feed into our current project.  We will publish the Youth Congress responses in the next newsletter!
GARDA VETTING

We've truly tested the new vetting system over the past few weeks with the high number of applications we've received. It is great to see clubs engaging so positively and adhering to the new legislation. We thank you for your support in this and hope you continue to do so. Don't forget to encourage applicants to read the process ( here )  thoroughly and fully complete forms. the appropriate forms can be found below:

Northern Ireland -  ID Validation Form ANI
Republic of Ireland  - E-Vet ID Form
Recruiting people in your club

It is good practice, no matter how well you know someone, to make sure any individual is properly recruited for the position they want to take on in a club.  This helps ensure that volunteers and employees are not overburdened in one role, and helps plan for succession as well.  The checklist compliments the recruitment policy by acting as a quick guide to what the club should be looking for.

Monitoring memberships

As affiliation deadline draws near the CCO should be looking at members who haven’t returned to the club this year.  Even if you think you know the reason, it is a good idea to send out the Exit Survey to get an understanding of why people are leaving.  Young people moving on from clubs do so for a number of reasons, but will have formed ties in the time they have been in the club.  It is good to give them the opportunity to give their feedback
