CAFOD Energy Access project in Kenya

Welcome to the December ACCESS newsletter

The Alliance of Civil Society Organisations for Clean Energy Access is pleased to welcome Energy4Impact, HEDON, Mercy Corps and People, Energy & Environment Development Association (PEEDA) to the network.

Many ACCESS members worked together on a report, launched last month, Beyond coal - Scaling up clean energy to fight global poverty. The paper explores the role of energy in fighting poverty, arguing that:

  • More coal will not end energy poverty
  • Coal is given too much credit for the reduction of extreme poverty
  • Better energy options exist to lift people out of income poverty
  • More coal will entrench poverty.
The paper was launched with an event in London, streamed globally, and gained great coverage across the media.

ACCESS would like to thank EnergyNet for inviting our members to attend and speak at their Off-the-Grid Forum. It is fantastic to see organisations appreciating the vital role civil society play in the energy transition and in delivering energy to all. ACCESS members also took part this month in the African Development Bank Civil Society Consultations, an EU Commission Debate on Women and Energy and many other events.

Happy Holidays from all of ACCESS!

Case Study - Kenya Climate Change Working Group, Kenya

The Kenya Climate Change Working Group (KCCWG) is a coalition of Kenyan civil society organisations working on climate and energy issues in Kenya. Read our interview with John Kioli to find out about their work and the energy access challenges in Kenya.

ACCESS at COP 22

The ACCESS Coalition had a clear message for negotiators at COP 22 - more finance needs to go towards decentralised renewables, and we need to make sure we are reaching the poorest. Read our statement. Many ACCESS members were at the COP, including Faustina who has shared her thoughts on the event.
