New! A Baker's Dozen

Smart Snack Recipes

To be a Smart Snack baker, you'll  use some special twists and turns to achieve the saturated fat, sugar and whole grain goals required.  Fortunately home-baked recipes are often lower in sodium than commercially baked goods and selling items "fresh-baked and locally made" makes 200 mg or less per serving" not as difficult to achieve.

Smart Snacks in Schools

USDA recently published practical, science-based nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold to children at school during the school day. The standards, required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, will allow schools to offer healthier snack foods to children, while limiting junk food.

The health of today’s school environment continues to improve. Students across the country are now offered healthier school lunches with more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The Smart Snacks in School standards will build on those healthy advancements and ensure that kids are only offered tasty and nutritious foods during the school day.

Soft Sugar Cookies

Soft Sugar Cookies is a beautifully simple recipe that incorporates the current "no trans fat" spread margarines that can be used in some baked goods and decreases saturated fats. By using the lighter colored white whole wheat flour, the recipe keeps its pale, soft sugar cookie appeal.

Spice Snack Cake

Spice Snack Cake used the softening characteristic of corn starch with the whole wheat flour. View the video showing how to prepare a cake flour substitute.

The dark corn syrup, is an "old-fashioned" twist to add flavor, color and shelf life to a low-fat cake. Reminder: Karo corn syrup is NOT a High-Fructose Corn Syrup product.

Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Apple Cinnamon Rolls are a sweet yeast dough, still lower in fat and sugar than a cookie or cake.  The butter and potato flakes help keep the rolls moist and flavorful into the second day after baking. Apples and cinnamon provide a wonderful tang and spice to boost their appeal without heavy frostings.

Bake for Funds

There may be easier way to raise funds, but there aren’t many that can teach more to young people while building positive community support. By applying creative, timely planning, thoughtful salesmanship and a unique approach, bake sales can be very profitable.

Join History. Bake sales are a part of American history. For centuries, people have “baked their best” for schools, churches, families in need, parks and community buildings. Individuals and families became “known” for a special cake, pie, bread, cookie or ethnic baked good that was sold by auction, baskets, cake walks, special order, whole or by-the-slice where everyone gathered.
