Cedar Hill Cemetery tour was a success!

A record crowd showed up for the Cedar Hill Cemetery walking tour on Oct. 22, 2016.  This year's tour centered around Elias Dyer, Philip S. Miller, Dr. Alexander, Mary Briscoe Enderud and several others.

Please join us on Thurs. Nov. 10, 2016 for a presentation by Lisette Clemons from the Arlington Ladies. The Arlington Ladies are a group of volunteers who attend funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery to ensure that no Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Coast Guardsman is buried alone.  The ladies are an official part of the funeral service, representing the military service's chief of staff or equivalent. The ladies present cards of condolence to the next of kin from the military service chief and spouse on behalf of the service family, and from the Arlington Lady herself.

The glowing star in Castle Rock at Christmas time has been a tradition for 80 years with the star first being turned on in 1936.  However, most people don’t know that the Star Lighting Ceremony actually began in 1965.  The following are excerpts from an article in the Douglas County News announcing the new tradition.

NEW IN CASTLE ROCK – RITUAL FOR LIGHTING OF THE STAR
November 11, 1965
Preparations are underway for a ceremony that; it is hoped may become a tradition of great significance for the town of Castle Rock.  The procedures involved in the lighting of our Christmas Star have been faithfully carried out in the years past by the loyal members of the Volunteer Fire Department.  This year an interested group, inspired by the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. William McConnell of the Golden Dobbin plan to work with Mr. Edsei Smith, Mr. William Randolph, Mr. Charles Holt, and Mr. Darrell Connelly, the special committee of Fire Department members which has been appointed to help develop an impressive program to accompany the turning on of the star.  Under the direction of Mr. Kent Brandebery and with the assistance of Richard Kysar, Mrs. John Reddy and Miss Gay Lankenau, a chorus of several hundred voices from the church and school choirs will present Christmas Carols, and a brass choir will furnish instrumental selections…. Please keep watching for further details about this thrilling community project.

CEREMONY TOOK PLACE
December 2, 1965
At the appointed moment, a word from Mayor Burgess, a signal from the platform to the firemen on the Rock, a turning of heads, and the lights went on, illuminating the Star for another Yuletide season.
Those responsible for the ceremony have been most gratified by the response to this first annual event.  They feel sure that as time goes on, the town of Castle Rock will indeed have established a tradition.  Representatives from The Rocky Mountain News and Channel 9 KBTV were on hand to record the happenings, and numerous out of town visitors joined with the local population to observe and participate in the service.

So, yes the Star Lighting has become a tradition of great significance for Castle Rock.  People come from all over to enjoy the entertainment, vendors and good ole’ home town atmosphere.  Let’s hope the ceremony continues for many more years to come.

Artifact of the Month - 
World War I Trenching Shovel

This shovel was used in France during World War I by Roy Hardison.  He was assigned to the Colorado contingent. He trained at Camp George West which was a base for the Colorado National Guard in Golden.  The shovel was recently donated to the museum by his family.

We are planning to have an exhibit on World War I in 2017 to mark the
100th anniversary of the US involvement in WWI.  We are seeking any items to put on display for this exhibit.  If you have anything you would like to loan or donate to the museum, we would greatly appreciate it.  Please contact the museum at museum@castlerockhistoricalsociety.org or 303-814-3164.

It was great to have students from Douglas County High School and Buffalo Ridge Elementary come for tours of the museum.
In total we had over 230 visitors to the museum in October.
Thank you to Shaun Boyd from the Douglas County Library for a great presentation about local ghost stories.  We had a great crowd - who knew that so many people were interested in this haunting topic.

The Holcomb - Whitney Hardware Store

321 Jerry Street


Built in 1887 it included a loading platform and a boomtown false front.  It once housed the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Baptist Church on the second floor.  It was converted into a furniture store and later into apartments when damaged by fire.  The small structure on the south side was once used for town meetings.

Recycle - Save those aluminum cans!! 

The museum collects and recycles aluminum cans to raise money for matching grants. Bring those cans to the museum and use the green container next to the bathroom. Aluminum cans only please. Anything else will be removed by the recycling company. Help the environment and raise a little money for the museum.
