Surveillance Self-Defense 101 in Baltimore

Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

On Saturday October 29, LBS will co-host a free workshop on surveillance self-defense.

The workshop will be open to the public, though particularly structured for activists supporting social movements. Participants need not wield technical expertise to attend this session, which is geared towards regular smartphone and laptop users. EFF's Shahid Buttar of the Electrionic Frontier Foundation will facilitate a teach-in and skill-share on surveillance, some immediate and practical steps you can take to protect your communications, and how to work with neighbors to inform surveillance policy at the state and local level.

LBS will also give a history and background on surveilance of Black grassroots activists in Baltimore. Join us at the Real News Network Building, 231 Holliday St. Baltimore, MD to learn more about surveillance, how to protect your privacy and information security, and how you can help build the movement for digital rights wherever you live.

This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Light refreshments will be provided.

Malcolm X Talk: Navigating the 2016 General Election

Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join us for a special edition of our Malcolm X Talk where we discuss and get involved in the 2016 Election!

Date: September 29, 2016
Time: 1pm-5pm
Place: Real News Network, 231 Holliday St., Baltimore, MD 21202

The event will be divided into two parts:

1pm - 2:30pm - Panel Discussion

We'll have a converation with a broad spectrum of political leaders. The goal is to give Baltimore folks information on how to use their vote to hold public officials and political parties accountable.

3pm - 5pm - Voting While Black Textathon with Color of Change

The issues affecting Black communities—police violence and an unfair criminal justice system, a changing economy and the lack of investment in our schools and communities—are central to this country’s success, so Black voters will play a very crucial role in helping to decide whether we elect politicians that will remove or exacerbate these problems for millions of Americans.

Voting While Black is a voter mobilization movement led by Color Of Change PAC—a Political Action Committee focused on building independent Black political power, amplifying Black voices, electing candidates who share our values, and holding them accountable to our communities. The Voting While Black campaign uses digital communications tools to engage Black voters in a massive volunteer effort aimed at getting out the vote from the top of the ticket to down-ballot races like prosecutor races, which can actually make the biggest, most immediate difference in how well Black communities thrive.

A Text-A-Thon is a strategic, collective action to contact Black voters in key battleground states and help motivate them to vote by or on November 8, 2016.

NOTE: This is NOT connected, in any way, to the presidential race or the Democratic/Republican Party. The goal of your participation will be to help get radical and progressive candidates elected in other down-ballot races happening around the country.

Lunch will be provided. This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
