Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers
Our senior students are well into their end of year external CIE examinations and next week Juniors will be sitting their own internal examinations for most of their subjects. Sitting examinations can be a particularly stressful time for our young people and developing the skills to cope with that stress is something we would like to develop in our students.

Huanui College opened in 2010, and since then our students have gained great success academically and in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Is it enough that the College caters for the academic and extracurricular needs of it’s students? What about student wellbeing?

The educational needs of a Year 12 student differ greatly to those of a Year 7 student.  Starting in 2017, the Junior School (Year 7 – 9) will be led by Brenda Rudolph who will relinquish her Head of English position. We are planning a new approach to the teaching and learning for our Year 7 – 9 students. For the most part students and parents will not notice much difference with academic rigour being a priority and specialist teachers for the different subjects. What we will be doing is incorporating “Positive education” into the teaching at Years 7 – 9. The goal of positive education is to encourage and support individuals to “flourish”. Flourishing is a combination of ‘feeling good and doing good’. Positive education helps students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, improve resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle. The idea of positive education comes originally from Martin Seligman a pioneer in positive psychology. Martin Seligman has developed an acronym PERMA which is the five most important building blocks of well-being and happiness.
  • Positive Emotions – feeling good
  • Engagement- being completely absorbed in activities
  • Relationships – being authentically connected to others
  • Meaning – purposeful existence
  • Achievement – a sense of accomplishment and success
Positive education will initially be taught in Years 7 – 9 where students will have one dedicated positive education class per week and it will be taught and modelled implicitly in all subjects in the Junior School. Our staff are currently undergoing training and are reviewing our programmes of learning to incorporate this new philosophy into the Junior School. It will be rolled out to the whole school in subsequent years.

This is an exciting opportunity to enrich our already excellent curriculum and I am sure it will have a positive outcome for all the students involved. If you have any questions regarding positive education and the changes to the Junior School for 2017, please do not hesitate to contact Brenda Rudolph.  Geelong Grammar school in Australia is a leader in positive education and this YouTube clip outlines what they are doing at this prestigious school.

2016 still has a few weeks to go after the examinations finish with Duke of Edinburgh tramps and our Year 9 students heading off to Rarotonga. School Prize giving will be on the morning of Thursday 8th December and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Peter Ackers – Principal

Quote of the Week:
“We deprive our children, our charges, of persistence. What I am trying to say is that we need to fail, children need to fail, we need to feel sad, anxious and anguished. If we impulsively protect ourselves and our children, as the feel-good movement suggests, we deprive them of learning-persistence skills.” -  Martin Seligman
If you have any concerns about your child, please feel free to contact their Dean:
Year 7-8 Dean: Brenda Rudolph
Year 9-13 Girls Dean: Carolyn Evans
Year 9-13 Boys Dean: Callum Mather

Year 8 Auckland Zoo Science Trip

In Term Three, our year eights travelled to Auckland for our science trip. We stayed for a night at the Auckland zoo, sleeping in the very building the elephants used to reside in. We were also allowed to explore the zoo after closing hours, allowing us to look at all the awesome creatures, in private. The animals themselves were amazing: incredibly, brightly coloured birds in vibrant, tropical aviaries, tiny, adorable pygmy marmosets, the world's smallest monkeys, massive, fierce tigers with amazing pelts… the list goes on and on! We were even given a tour of the zoo with a guide, seeing exclusive reptiles and going up close to a pair of cheetahs. Our guide also taught us about all the animals and conservation of rainforests and endangered species. The year eight trip to the zoo was an amazing experience that I’m sure everyone learned something from and enjoyed.

Our Healthy Stream

Harriet and Jordy from Drains to Harbour came to take our Year 8 students to our stream to see whether it was a healthy stream. We tested for clarity, pH, conductivity and made sketches of the habitat. But the most exciting part was sampling and looking at all the little creatures found living in the stream!

Information On HPV Vaccination Changes

Changes to the year 8 HPV vaccination schedule in 2017, will now include boys. The vaccine has been improved and now only 2 vaccinations are required. There will be more information  available over the coming weeks. Positive changes to the HPV vaccine now mean that your son / daughter will be protected against  9 strains of the HPV virus that cause cancer.

Why boys now? Funding is available in NZ to include boys in the HPV vaccination programme. By vaccinating boys and girls we are protecting women from cervical cancer as well as men and women form other HPV related cancers.accinate for HPV in year 8?  At this age a child’s immune system takes up the vaccine more effectively. At this age boys and girls are not generally sexually active and the vaccine is best given before they become sexually active. ‘Vaccinate before they need protection’.
