Welcome

...to my first Breaking the Cycle newsletter where I aim to keep friends and supporters of my expeditions and projects updated with the latest developments. You have received this mail because you've signed up to the newsletter and/or you are a highly valued supporter.
Crowdfunding Campaign

In order to raise funds for my Breaking the Cycle South Pole expedition, Steve Christini, the genius engineer from Philadelphia, USA, who has custom made both of my all wheel drive polar bikes, and I have just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. We are looking to our faithful supporters to help kick off the campaign and build the foundation we need to raise a significant amount of funds.
Claudio von Planta's video really shows what the Christini AWD, mark II, with the 5" wide tyres can do. Filmed during this year's expedition in Northeast Greenland, the unseasonably warm weather made for some very soft snow conditions!

Ever since my first test run in Svalbard, Norway, Steve Christini's AWD fatbikes have created quite a stir around the world.
Of course, many of you don't have a use for a bike built for snowy conditions, so we've included a wide variety of rewards for supporting the Breaking the Cycle project; cool t-shirts, cycle jerseys, books, ebooks, caps...
So please take a look. We have options from $10 to $10,000, or you can simply donate! Whatever you can do to help the team on their way will be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your support

About

The physical purpose of Breaking the Cycle South Pole, is to make the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. Starting in December 2017, the 1800km supported journey will take around 42 days, in temperatures as low as -40C and at a maximum altitude of 3000m.

To give the best chance of success, I have surrounded myself with world-class experts in logistics, filmmaking, technology and communications. I have facilitated the development of some innovative technology such as the first all-wheel drive fat-bike, custom-made clothing and the communications strategy. My highly experienced support team includes renowned Swiss filmmaker, Claudio von Planta, British filmmaker and adventurer, Stuart Kershaw and Australian polar explorer Eric Philips OAM as advisor. We will be working with London-based brand and content marketing agency, Captive Minds, and Icelandic logistics company Arctic Trucks, together the only organisations to have successfully managed live streaming across the Antarctic icecap.

In order to perpetuate the value of this expedition, my previous Breaking the Cycle in Africa venture and future projects, I am creating the Breaking the Cycle Foundation. The core principles that I promote through my Breaking the Cycle initiatives are to contribute to the development of our future leaders and to make positive impacts on the communities and the environments of the places I travel through. A New Adventure
Join me to cycle from Marrekech to the Sahara
Marrekech - High Atlas - Sahara Desert

Join me in May 2017 for a physically exhilarating, culturally infused journey into the heart of Morocco.

We begin in Marrakech, enjoying the 1000 year-old ochre-coloured city with fascinations at every turn, the old Medina and a blend of cultures. From Marrakech, our journey traverses the highest mountain range in North Africa to tackle the rugged, prehistoric, flat-topped peaks that are still used by the nomadic berbers. We cycle through the stunning Todra Gorge and ascend to cross the Djebel Sahro mountains and descend to the town of Alnif located on the southern slopes of this mountain chain. The last leg of our journey takes us into the lunar desert landscapes on the edge of the Sahara showing where we will spend the final night of our cycle in a desert camp under the stars. Our return journey to Marrakech takes us via Ouarzazate and the UNESCO World Heritage Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou.

I can't wait to escort this classic World Expeditions journey!
This trip is not to be missed.

Community and Education

Scout Ambassador
Back in March I was honoured to be made an ambassador for Scouts Victoria. Earlier this month I returned to where my investiture took place, the 4th Williamstown Sea Scouts, to be a part of it's annual Family Day and talk to the group. The bike, of course, was a hit!

Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants

About a year ago, Canadian school teacher, Joe Grabowski started a very exciting educational initiative called Exploring by the Seat of your Pants to bring adventure, science and conservation into classrooms across North America. Using Google Hangouts as the medium for communication, Joe and his team ask presenters from around the world to take a class. Up to six classes can participate live and ask questions at the end of the presentation. The event is also streamed live on YouTube and recorded so it can be watched at any time. So far more than 2000 classrooms have taken part and his organisation is expanding rapidly.

On Thursday, it was my turn. It was quite surreal talking into my laptop at 1am in the morning to primary school students on the other side of the world! Apart from an issue at my end with a shoddy internet connection, it was a great experience. Joe and I are discussing running a series and potentially involving classes from Australia and other parts of the world!
