Slovenia will host and organize the 2nd World OER Congress
Open Educational Resources (OER) have a central role to play in Education 2030 in the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4 which calls for the international community to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all with its key pillars of access, equity and inclusion.” Read more.

New Report Available: Opening up Education
The OpenEdu team of the European Commission published a new report Opening up Education: A Support framework for Higher Education Institutions. The Framework proposes a definition of open education and aims to provide support for higher education institutions (HEIs) to open up education. Read more.

OpenStax Comes to Poland
Open textbooks developed by Rice University have been a great success throughout the United States. OpenStax textbooks are currently used in more than 1000 university courses in the country. Although textbook prices are not as much an educational obstacle in Poland as they are in the U.S., easy access to these textbooks can be challenging for Polish students. Katalyst Education -- a new educational not-for-profit foundation based in Warsaw -- embarked upon a mission to bring these resources to both Polish and international students studying in Poland. The OER World Map; New Features
The OER World Map project was initiated in 2015 in order to provide the “most complete and comprehensible picture of the global Open Educational Resources movement”. With the launch of version 1.1 of the platform, the OER World Map is now a “Social Education Management Information System which […] combines elements of a social networking platform, a business information system, a geoinformation system and a library catalogue”. France is on the move with Open Education
The French Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research in cooperation with UNESCO hosted a conference on digital learning in higher education, featuring talks on open education and MOOCs, and their role in the digital future of higher education in France. The Ministry also pledged to continue supporting open education. Read more.

Open Education Developments in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a new UNESCO Chair in Open Educational Resources (OER). The Dutch Ministry of Education continues to focus on and support open and online education. The Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) will celebrate 10-year anniversary of OpenCourseWare at their institution in 2017 and will be launching new projects. Read more.

2016 European Distance Learning Week

EDEN, the European Distance and E-Learning Network, is organizing the first European Distance Learning Week from November 7-11. EDEN will host webinars each day at 13:00 CET, most of which include aspects of open education. The Open Education Global 2017 Conference: Call for Proposals: Submission Deadline Extended!
The Open Education Consortium and the University of Cape Town, hosts of the Open Education Global 2017 Conference, invite proposals for conference sessions to take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 8-10 March 2017.
 
The theme of the Open Education Global 2017 Conference is Open for Participation.
 
The deadline for submitting proposals is extended until 31 October 2016.

Planning a global conference is a long and intensive process, and thus applications for hosting are taken two years in advance. For more information and to submit a proposal please click here.

Reminder: The Open Education Awards for Excellence 2017: Call for Nominations
The Open Education Awards for Excellence provide annual recognition to outstanding contributions in the Open Education community. These awards recognize distinctive Open Educational Resources, Open Projects & Initiatives, as well as exemplary leaders in Open Education worldwide.
 
Nominations will be accepted through 18 December 2016. The awards will be presented at the next Open Education Global Conference in Cape Town, South Africa 8-10 March 2017.

Reminder: Open Education Week 2017: Call for Participation
Open Education Week, March 27-31, 2017
 
The Open Education Week Planning Committee invites your contributions to and participation in the annual Open Education Week, featuring online and in-person events around the world. You decide how you will participate: host a local event, give a webinar, submit a video about your open education work or use the week to highlight the benefits of open education. 
 
To get the website ready, we need your submissions by 28 February 2017. You are welcome to submit multiple resources or events. Please fill out one form for each contribution.
