Innovation Spotlight

NIH funds innovative study to examine use of text messaging in improving diabetes care
Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund an innovative clinical trial that studies the efficacy of text messaging among high-risk Hispanic patients in San Diego County. Half of the participants will receive personalized text messages while the other half will receive standard, one-size-fits-all messages. Researchers will measure hemoglobin A1c levels, LDL cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure, and they will look for differences in patient-doctor/nurse communication, medication adherence and cost effectiveness between the two groups. Read more.

What Fit4D Clinicians have to say:
Reaching out to patients in a convenient and timely way is key to providing support and accountability. Technology is such a huge part of our day-to-day life that it makes sense to harness it to reach patients where they are. It is amazing how much impact a simple, personalized text message can have on helping patients better manage their diabetes. It will be exciting to see the results of this study!
