Welcome to the October edition of Global Voice. Here at Soroptimist International HQ, the team is busy preparing for the launch of a brand new SI website.  Fresh and accessible, the new website will make keeping up with global news and joining in the conversation so much easier. More user friendly, particularly for those using mobile devices, the website will offer great new ways of interacting and better ways of showcasing the amazing work of the global organisation. We will be sending a special email announcement to you all as soon as the website goes live, so watch this space!

This month's Global Voice brings you news from events in Vienna and takes a look at the CSW61 Soroptimist International Written Statement. We find out more about a handful of Soroptimist Club Projects, and look forward to the annual '16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence' campaign, and the opportunity for all of us to 'Orange the World'!

SI PROJECT NEWS: In the October round-up of Soroptimist Club Projects, we find out about projects taking place in the UK, Japan, USA, India and New Zealand, each one making a difference to the lives of women and girls.

SI NEWS: The Soroptimist International Board has renewed its commitment to a world of peace, gender equality, and human rights at its September Board meeting, which took place in Cambridge UK. Moving forward with a revised mission to meet the SI vision, the board confirmed principles and strategic priorities in a Strategic Plan that covers 2016 – 2019. SI NEWS: Soroptimist International is pleased to announce that recruitment of volunteer roles for the 2017 – 2019 biennium has commenced. The roles are: SI Treasurer (Officer role), SI Director of Advocacy (Officer role), and the SI Assistant Director of Advocacy. NEWS: The 2016 United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) took a stand against ageism by drawing attention to and challenging negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older persons and ageing. Read a blog by Sabine Kinzer, SI UN Rep, Geneva by clicking HERE

CSW61: The sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 to 24 March 2017. The priority theme will be ‘Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work’.

Soroptimist International, Graduate Women International (GWI), International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International), National Alliance of Women’s Organisations (NAWO), Widows for Peace Through Democracy, Women for Water Partnership, and Zonta International, have released a statement concerning women’s economic empowerment and its link to sustainable development.

UN News Vienna: Around 800 government representatives, crime experts and civil society partners met between 17-21 October, to discuss the global challenges of transnational organized crime. The eighth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) promotes strategies needed to counter crime based on the Convention and its three protocols on human and firearms trafficking and migrant smuggling.

International Day of the Girl Child
Everyday, Soroptimists seek to Educate, Empower and Enable women & girls. 11 October, The International Day of the Girl Child addresses the challenges girls face and promotes and celebrates girls’ empowerment. This day is about ending discrimination, and investing in girls and their future. Find out more about the theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, by clicking HERE.
From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is a time to join together to end violence against women and girls around the world. EDUCATE EMPOWER ENABLE 2011 - 2015

The 2011 - 2015 Quadrennium brochure Educate, Empower, Enable includes features on both See Solar, Cook Solar and Birthing in the Pacific, plus two projects from each of the Federations and lots more. A PDF of the brochure is available to read or for download by clicking on the image below.


Soroptimist International submitted a report to the United Nations on achieving gender equality through sustainable development. For the SDGs to be achieved, women and girls must be included, empowered and enabled through development efforts. This report uses SI club projects and policy recommendations to inform how the SDGs can work best for women and girls. Click HERE to view the full report.
