First Friday November 4

First Fridays are a time to meet other artists and other interesting people.

Come along at 1pm with something to share for lunch. Food or drink - just something lovely. If you bring something like cheese or bread, it's always a good idea to bring a knife to cut it with as our kitchen implement collection is rather paltry.

You can find us this month in the Garden Room Gallery, which is in Dartington Space. If you've not been before, just park in the main car park at Dartington, then head DOWN the hill until you see the large blue sign that says SPACE. Walk down towards the buildings, and you'll find us upstairs at the end.

We usually finish around 3.30 or earlier.

This month our featured guest is Mat Osmond. Mat is a writer and illustrator with an abiding interest in the common imaginal ground of art, spirituality and ecology. He's part of the RANE (Research in Art, Nature and Environment) research group, part of art.earth and based at Schumacher College, and works as Senior Lecturer on Falmouth University's MA Illustration: Authorial Practice

You can see more of his work at www.strandlinebooks.co.uk
Hatching a Fly

As well as touching on some new threads of work, Mat will talk about the development of a recent (2015) illustrated poetry chapbook called Fly Sings, using that as a point of departure to ask people what it is that making art - in whatever form or context - makes possible.

The notions of eco-art and eco-poetics both seem to imply that in some sense art helps us to deal with the 'wicked problems' that our culture presents us with.

That solar panels, systems theory or permaculture help us may be easy enough to defend.

What about art and poetry? What is it in us that stands in need of the help specific to these pursuits?

...and don't forget the final First Friday on December 2nd. Watch this space for more info.
