Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund: Update


The Arts, Culture and Museum Committee through Council, established the Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund in 2016. In the first year of the program, six individuals and/or organizations were able to create cultural products by and for the residents of Niagara Falls. 

The 2016 recipients of the Niagara Falls Cultural Development Find as evaluated by the Arts, Culture & Museum Committee were:
  • Niagara Falls Art Gallery
  • Rafik Guirguis
  • Niagara Falls Military Museum
  • Shelley Glica
  • Marinko Jareb
  • C.D. Onofrio

Cemetery Services Project: Update


The City of Niagara Falls administers, operates and maintains nineteen cemeteries and one indoor columbarium within its boundaries. Each year, the City's Cemetery Services conducts more than 500 interments at its active, semi active and assorted columbaria (indoor & outdoor).

Mark Richardson, Manager of Cemeteries Services reported on work Cemetery Services staff accomplished in 2016, as well as the proposed 2017 improvements of operations, public safety , and the continued development to increase availability of burial options for residents of Niagara Falls and Region alike. 

Council also asked for a report back on the decommissioning of the former Recreation building on Lundy's Lane.

Fourth Avenue: Traffic Operations Review
 

Since the opening of the Thorold Stone Road extension to the Gale Centre, Transportation Staff have carried out a neighbourhood traffic operations review of Fourth Avenue from Bridge Street to the Gale Centre. The report found that traffic volumes and percentage of arena users driving on Fourth Avenue have been steadily declining since the opening of the Thorold Stone Road entrance.

Council approved the following Traffic Operations Review recommendations at last night's meeting:
  • Heavy vehicles, including buses, be prohibited on Fourth Ave north of Bridge Street
  • The heavy vehicle restriction include an "Up to $5,000 Fine" tab;
  • That the existing speed humps on Fourth Avenue remain in place, and driveways to the Gale Centre, remain open at this time;
  • Recreation Staff embark on an awareness campaign to notify all arena users and permit holders to use Thorold Stone Road;
  • Transportation Staff monitor the traffic operations for the upcoming season; and,
  • The Gale Centre Access/Multi-Purpose Trail Municipal Class EA be completed taking into account the recommendations in the report

Victoria Centre Streetscape Revitalization Project: Phase 2


Last night, City Council pre-approved future funding to undertake the engineering design work and cost estimates for phase 2 of the Victoria Centre Streetscape Revitalization Project at the request of the Victoria Centre BIA (VCBIA) in order to advance the project to the second phase.  

Before the second phase of the streetscape work can be implemented, extensive improvements to the existing underground infrastructure are required. To ensure that these improvements are completed in an effective and cost efficient manner, the design must be completed prior to construction approval. The second phase will be focusing on the section of Victoria Avenue from Centre Street to Clark Avenue.

Inter-municipal Transit: Update


Dillon Consulting provided Council with a presentation on the Inter-municipal Transit work that's continuing and presented options which are  being considered for integrated municipal transit for the region.  The presentation provided information and a look at next steps including public consultation for the Fall.

No Left Turn Sign

Removal of Left Turn Restriction: Bender St at Palmer Ave


At last night's meeting, Council directed that the left turn prohibition facing southbound motorists on Palmer Avenue at Bender Street be removed. The current traffic conditions on Bender Street offer numerous opportunities for Palmer Avenue drivers to be able to safely carry out a left turn onto Bender Street,

John McCall MacBain

John McCall MacBain Naming Request


To acknowledge John MacBain's significant financial donations of the McCall MacBain Foundation to the Macbain Community Centre, Family & Children's Services Niagara and millions granted to health, education and environment projects in Canada, Europe and Africa, Council named the first section of the Millennium Trail (McLeod Road to Lundy's Lane) the "John McCall MacBain Pathway". 

Council also approved November 18, 2016 being "John McCall MacBain Day" in the City of Niagara Falls.

Dorchester Road: U-Turns Prohibition

Council approved that a "No U-Turns" sign to be posted facing northbound motorists on Dorchester Road at the end of the centre median island next to Optimist Square at last night's meeting.

Joe Gagliardi: An Everyday Hero

At last night's meeting, Council recognized the heroic efforts of City employee, Joe Gagliardi, for his life saving efforts at the Welland River. On August 25, 2016, Joe was working with his crew cleaning up in the Chippawa boat dock area, when he heard calls from help coming from the shoreline. Without hesitation, Joe dove in with all of his work gear on and safely pulled a 22 year old St. Catharines resident to shore.

Congratulations to the Niagara Falls Minor "A" Peewee Falcons for winning the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) Championships!

Team members include: Aethan Ballen, Micheal Delazzari, Jack Kemp, Dylan Rush, Lauren Crawford, Matthew Donnison, Riley Kidd, Joseph Vetrone, Adrian Diodati, Carter Girotti, Daniel Noble, and Colby Webb.

Congratulations to the Niagara Falls Minor "A" Mosquito Falcons for their second straight win at the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) Championships!

Team members include: CJ Bain, Marcus Harrington, Brady Pearce, Thomas Somerville, Jonah Cukierski, Erik Iseppon, Luke Rogers, Armando Valle, Johnny Gignac, Sawyer Neal and Ethan Smith.
