Relive the highlights of the UCLG World Summit

DAY 1 - 12 OctoberThe 2016 World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders began on Wednesday morning in Bogotá, Colombia, with an official opening ceremony featuring welcoming speeches and entertainment from the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra. Attendees then took part in sessions covering a wide variety of urban issues, including public transport, drug policies, the right to the city, inclusive and transparent city development and culture as a trigger for sustainable development. In the afternoon, an opening plenary addressed the theme of ‘The Era of Strong Local Government: Recalling the Spirit of Habitat II,’ followed by parallel sessions on topics ranging from urban design, transport and population health to local governments as decision makers in world affairs. A permanent working platform on co-creating the city convened throughout the day.
DAY 2 - 13 OctoberOn Thursday, participants attended parallel workshops, policy dialogues and learning forums that introduced and discussed a range of tools, techniques and concepts intended to promote culture, urban transformation, decentralization and bottom-up national development.
An afternoon plenary addressed ‘Links between the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda,’ and was followed by a meeting of the UCLG Executive Bureau. Throughout the day attendees explored new topics through films at the cinema forums and 30-minute talks at the Network Hub, where several presentation corners were held.
DAY 3 - 14 OctoberOn Friday, the Summit filled its third day with forums, meetings, policy dialogues, workshops and the continuation of the permanent working platform dedicated to co-creating the city. Ample networking opportunities allowed participants to connect in informal settings and at a social event in the evening.
In the afternoon, the second session of the Second World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments convened and adopted a joint statement on the New Urban Agenda to deliver to Habitat III in Quito, Ecuador, on 16 October 2016 at the third session of the Second World Assembly.
DAY 4 - 15 OctoberThe 2016 World Summit convened for its final day on Saturday, beginning with the launch of the 4th Global Report on Local Democracy and Decentralization (GOLD IV). This report is one of the main outcomes of the Summit. It provides analysis, innovative examples and case studies from around the globe to support the recommendations of the Global Agenda of Local and Regional Governments for the 21st Century.
A meeting of the UCLG World Council, which is the network’s policymaking body, also took place in the morning. The Council elected the new UCLG President, Mpho Parks Tau, Councilor of Johannesburg, South Africa, and President, South African Local Government Association, for the 2016-2019 period.
