Mosul: Geneva Call works with the Shia Popular Mobilization Forces and the Peshmerga forces on the protection of civilians
As the military operations around Mosul enter their 18th day, Geneva Call is continuing in its efforts to raise awareness about the protection of civilians with the main armed actors involved, particularly the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Shia Popular Mobilization Forces.

From 10–20 October 2016, Geneva Call trained 17 Peshmerga officers on international humanitarian law (IHL) and the protection of civilians. From 22–24 October, Geneva Call’s delegation to Iraq met several leaders of the Shia Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), including Ahmad al-Assadi, the PMF’s official spokesperson, Kareem Al-Nouri, leader of the Badr Brigade, and Sayyed Amar Hakim, Head of the Islamic Council and Head of the Iraqi National Alliance. Syria: Geneva Call launches “Fighter not Killer”—a media campaign on the rules of war
On 20 October 2016, with hostilities ongoing in Syria, Geneva Call relaunched its “Fighter not Killer” media campaign on the rules of war.
Until December, video clips presenting such basic humanitarian rules as the prohibitions against targeting civilians or civilian buildings, will be disseminated extensively across Syria via major television channels including Al Aan and Orient TV, and via social media and major websites. Burma/Myanmar: Geneva Call and partners conduct a first humanitarian workshop with the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army
From 9 to 11 October, Geneva Call conducted a workshop for the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) on humanitarian norms in co-operation with the Karen Community Based Network Group and three international agencies near the Thai-Burma/Myanmar border.
The engagement with DKBA started in 2014, however, this workshop marked the first time that Geneva Call had led an activity specifically for the DKBA. The DKBA is still active and controls some territory in the east of Karen/Kayin State.
Through this workshop, Geneva Call sought to promote understanding of relevant international standards—particularly with respect to children, gender and landmines. [...]

Geneva Call's Executive President is awarded the 2016 Fondation pour Genève Prize
On 6 October 2016, the Fondation pour Genève awarded Elisabeth Decrey Warner the 2016 Fondation pour Genève Prize at a ceremony in Geneva.
Around 600 people attended the event, including the General Director of the United Nations Office in Geneva, the Swiss and Genevan authorities, as well as representatives from various diplomatic missions. This distinction rewards her work with Geneva Call, an organization dedicated to improving the protection of civilians in armed conflict. [...]

Sudan: 7 SPLM-N representatives in Europe attend a training session on International Humanitarian Law in Geneva
In October 2016, Geneva Call held a training session for 7 SPLM-N representatives based in various European countries (Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).
During this training event, Geneva Call presented the main rules contained in these three Deeds of Commitment, and the participants studied ways of pushing forward with their practical implementation following signature and their related monitoring. [...]

Military operations in Mosul: "Civilians must be respected and protected regardless of their religion or ethnicity," say 130 representatives of civil society organizations
On 18th October, Geneva Call in partnership with Un Ponte Per, Public Aid Organization and Norwegian People's Aid, organized a conference in Dohuk on the protection of civilians during the military operations in Mosul.
More than 130 representatives from civil society organizations participated in the conference, including the authorities of the Ninawa province, representatives from all religious and ethnic minorities present in Mosul, Yezidi, Christian, Sunni and Shia minorities as well as local and international nonprofit organizations working in the area. Together they adopted a joint declaration in which they called on all parties involved in the current military operations to protect civilian populations regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
