Former Baylor Title IX Coordinator Crawford says former Bears AD McCaw asked for immunity for FB student-athletes still enrolled who may have been involved in sexual assault allegations, a request that was refused. "I looked around the room and everyone had their heads down. I said, 'No, I don't know [if] they were an accomplice. I don't know if they were part of this culture. […] I think it was clear that they didn't like the fact that this information had come to my attention so quickly in my tenure at the university." Others involved in the meeting referenced by Crawford indicate McCaw nor the university ever made such a request. Additional claims from Crawford include the use of her $1.2M budget to payout victims. BU says Crawford lacked the administrative skills to operate the Title IX department & is blaming the school for "her own shortcomings."  (link)
The MAC Council of Presidents unanimously approved a six-point Diversity & Inclusion Program, with initiatives including a Conference Diversity & Inclusion Statement, 25 new annual internships, a mentoring program, a bi-annual summit, a resource webpage and an annual awards platform. MAC Commish Steinbrecher: "This plan is a starting point, developed through intensive study and debate over the past year and a half. Our membership believes this will be a framework for growing a more diverse work force, in both coaching and administration, in intercollegiate athletics. This is the appropriate goal and one which will foster a more inclusive environment." (link)
The Big Ten will add six Friday night FB games over the course of the next six seasons as part of its new TV pacts with ESPN/ABC & Fox. Commish Delany: "All things considered,we thought it was worthwhile to dip our toe in the water." All six will be played in September or October. Michigan supports the move, but won't host, per AD Manuel, "With our large fan base, Michigan fans and alumni travel significant distances to attend games, making Saturdays our preferred day for all football games." Penn State is in the same boat. Ohio State AD Smith points to a single weekend annually in October that would work for the Buckeyes. Northwestern & Illinois are all about it. (link); From CBSSports.com's Dodd: "Wisconsin will consider playing selected Fridays before Labor Day, has not committed to anything past that. (link)
More from Madison as Wisconsin AD Alvarez continues to deal with questionable costumes worn by some fans to last weekend's FB match-up with Nebraska. "I am deeply troubled by the incident from last Saturday's game, and I am sorry for the harm it caused. I am determined that nothing like this will happen again. […] Our plan, before our next home football game, is to have a revised policy in place. Our department is committed to working collaboratively to make our stadium a great and safe place for fans to watch a football game." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz pens on proposed rule changes submitted by the 'Power 5,' which include continued consideration around time demands for student-athletes. "There also basically would be an continuous eight-hour ban on required activities after an athlete is released from team obligations after a home game that ends after 9 p.m., or upon a return to campus after 9 p.m. from an away or neutral-site game." A required student-athlete time management plan is also on the list, plus this one from the Pac-12, "Schools would be barred from holding off-campus practices that are not related to an away or neutral-site game during a school vacation period that occurs outside a team’s regular playing season. The proposal appears aimed at preventing activities such as the spring football practices that Michigan held earlier this year in Florida." More. (link)
The Collegiate Commissioners Association began meetings yesterday at the Big Ten offices yesterday with early signing periods for FB atop the list of discussion. Mississippi State FB HC Mullen, a member of the FB Oversight Committee & the ad hoc working group, "I'd have been very adamantly opposed to the proposal they came up with if I'd have been available." Big 12 Commish Bowlsby, who is chair of the committee, in response, "He had the opportunity to participate by telephone and I think he was planning to but wasn't able to." MAC Commish Steinbrecher: "I have a reasonable expectation that this will be approved, but I think there's a ways to go -- and I think there's a lot more discussion that has to take place." (link)
With his FB program at 5-3 (4-2) & still with a chance to make the SEC Championship game, Kentucky AD Barnhart comments on the vibe of the Wildcats fan base with an important match-up with Georgia coming up, "I think for Saturday night, for us to have a full house, for us to have close to a full house, I’m sure there’s still folks on the outside who are saying ‘Hey, we’re still waiting to see. Are we for real? We’re not quite totally vested in it yet.’ […] Our fans, they’ve got a right to change the way they think,” Barnhart said. “It’s part of the deal. In the microwave society we’re in, there’s no mystery that sometimes the ebb and the flow, if you ride that wave too hard, you’re going to have a hard time living. So you try to be steady in that. Steadying the storm." (link); Barnhart also says he'd love to have to figure out a solution to MBB facing UCLA in Lexington on December 3rd, the same day the SEC FB title game will be played in Atlanta. "Being in November is a little different. Now you start saying, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ It begins to crystalize in front of you and you’re saying, ‘OK, can we be in the conversation one more week?’ You know, that’s what we want: be in the conversation next week. If we win this week, we’re still in it." (link)
The small world of college athletics was on full display with Tuesday's first College FB Playoff rankings as Texas A&M was slotted at #4 & Washington one spot behind at #5. Of course, Aggies AD Wooward arrived in College Station earlier this year after a leadership tenure in Seattle. SportspressNW.com's Thiel gets cheeky on the state UW was left, including a soft FB non-conference slate, but ultimately concludes the current situation for Washington should lead to plenty of animosity & motivation, "In college football these days, there is no place more anxiety-ridden that being the fifth dog in a four pork-chop meal. The suspicion is that all that manufactured anger will be taken out on the Cal Bears, the biggest victims of the first-week CFP rankings." (link)
This will be a popular read from IDEO Prez/CEO Brown for HBR, "Leaders Can Turn Creativity into a Competitive Advantage." Brown argues organizational design is totally different for one focused on creativity over efficiency. Details three key leadership roles IDEO has identified: 1) The Explorer ("The explorer leads from the front not by issuing directions, but by asking strategically purposeful questions. These set the organization off on explorative quests that, if they’re successful, will bring great value."); 2) The Gardner ("By nurturing new capabilities, providing spaces and tools that encourage creativity and collaboration, and protecting the tender shoots of innovation from the efficiency-led behaviors of the organizational core, the gardener releases the creative potential of the organization.) and 3) The Player-Coach ("Leaders must engage in the act of the innovation without dominating it. The job of the player-coach is to anticipate obstacles that the team may not expect, to nudge and guide the cycles of experimentation required to bring ideas to life.") More. (link)

The MAC has donated $50K to the Bahamas Red Cross to assist with disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The MAC made its commitment through Atlantis’ YouCaring.com campaign which was launched immediately following the passage of the powerful storm. MAC Commish Steinbrecher, who contributed to the donation and is no stranger to The Bahamas through his involvement with the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl, explained why the conference chose to help: "I, along with our membership, have come to develop a deep love for the people of The Bahamas and for the fine staff at Atlantis, Paradise Island. It’s one of the unique and special relationships in all of intercollegiate athletics and it is our way of giving back to the country." (link)

Former Cal MBB student-athlete & current Milwaukee Bucks HC Kidd commits a $1M gift to the Golden Bears to create the Jason Kidd Scholarship. Kidd: "This is an opportunity for me to help a student-athlete be able to focus on school and play basketball at a high level." AD Williams: "Jason Kidd is already legendary on this campus. […] The establishment of this scholarship endowment means that his name will be around forever in a different way, a way that shows his generosity, his commitment to Cal and Cal's future." (link)

Auburn has put the $140M renovation project for the north end zone of Jordan-Hare Stadium on hold until at least 2018. The delayed project, which was first proposed in May 2015, includes plans for an expanded concourse and walkway, club seating, a new video scoreboard, a recruiting lounge, and a new locker room among other amenities. AD Jacobs: "It is not dead. We're continuing to work on that and we still have the same goals in mind. We want to create a great fan experience, we want to have a great place for our football team to play and a great experience for our recruits. When we get a package ready to present to the Auburn family and they think that renovating the north end is ready to go, we'll do it." (link)

In what has become a pregame ritual, Illinois AD Whitman leads a group of local residents and Illini fans on a 4.5-mile run through campus on home football game days. Whitman on the Game Day Running Club: "It’s kind of fun for people to come and reconnect with the university. It’s just a fun thing for people to do." The pregame runs reportedly even inspired North Carolina AD Cunningham to start up a similar initiative, as he tweeted about a run on campus shortly after being in Champaign for the Illini-UNC FB game in September. (link)
Notable Washington State supporter & former student-athlete Thompson, along with state senator Baumgartner speak out on what they perceive as unfairness in the way the university handled the suspension of FB student-athlete Barber for his involvement in fight earlier in the year. Thompson: "The system is, I'm ashamed of it, as a Coug, and it has to get changed." Baumgartner: "This is not about getting Robert Barber back on the football field. This is about getting Robert Barber back in the classroom and getting him his degree." The university sticks to a previous statement, points to its code of conduct. (link)
Columbia has launched a new branding campaign "#OnlyHere," designed to highlight the advantages its student-athletes enjoy, including its "extraordinary location in world-class New York City, unparalleled academic and career opportunities, an elite-level athletic performance program and 'built to win' foundation in facilities and personnel." As part of the initiative, the university has created a newly designed website, new signage in its athletics facilities, refreshed athletics wordmark and the introduction of its new social media hashtag #OnlyHere. Witt/Kieffer's Smith pens on, "The Best Search Committees," for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Details the aspects of, 1) Appointing a strong chair; 2) Soliciting board input; 3) Focuses on the known; 4) Listens to the search consultant; 5) Advances candidates on potential rather than experience; 6) Balances evaluating with selling; and, 7) Makes diversity a priority. In closing, "So the next time you are asked to serve on a search committee, take some time to reflect upon these and other characteristics that can make it great. Applying what you learn increases the likelihood of hiring the right person." (link)

When it comes to sports apps, you might assume that apps from pro leagues, pro teams and fantasy sports are better than apps from DI colleges. That's a false assumption, according to a 2016 research study of 550 NCAA fans. Fans like their favorite school's app better than apps from the pros, and 2 out of 3 are satisfied with their college team's app. The "Sports Apps vs. Other Apps" infographic and "Fan Engagement Study for NCAA Division I" eBook cover the survey findings. The story of Colorado's FB resurgence is all about sticking to the plan. AD George: "We kept saying, ‘Stay the course, stay the course,’ because we knew we were making progress. [...] They stuck it out and they stayed together. That’s why we’re so solid from a leadership standpoint. Those guys have persevered through adversity and some real difficult days and games and seasons. They stuck together. Now we’re seeing the benefit of that." HC MacIntyre recounts telling his first round of recruits how hard the process would be, but also how significant the reward would feel. Developing the talent he brought to Boulder has been a key, as has the Buffs $150M+ commitment to upgrading facilities. (link)
Western Michigan FB HC Fleck says that his now 9-0 Broncos are going to "embrace" their #23 ranking in the College Football Playoff rankings and will continue to work hard as they currently sit one spot ahead of Boise State, putting them in position for the New Year’s Six Cotton Bowl. Fleck: "The attention that Western Michigan is getting, our players, and our coaching staff who deserve that; our athletic director, Kathy Beauregard; Dr. (John) Dunn (university president); the city of Kalamazoo; past, present and future Broncos; that’s who it’s for. Enjoy the heck out of it. But our players, we have a job to do and we just want to continue to keep growing." (link)
Beer at ballgames: After successful implementation in FB, Tulsa has extended beer sales at all MBB tips & "select" WBB games. Three dedicated serving stands will handle the traffic. Same prices as FB: $6 for 16oz. of both domestic & craft options. AD Gragg: "Our fans have been very responsible in helping make beer sales a positive experience, and we anticipate that the same will hold true for the basketball season." No mention of sales or revenue numbers. (link); New Mexico Deputy AD Hutchins says the Lobos have been generating $8K to $15K of net revenue for alcohol sales at FB games so far this season. (link)
Glamour named the female victim involved in the rape by former Stanford swimming student-athlete Turner "Woman of the Year." "Emily Doe" also opened up to the publication on what happened after Turner's sentencing, "So now to the one who said, I hope my daughter never ends up like her, I am learning to say, I hope you end up like me, meaning, I hope you end up like me strong. I hope you end up like me proud of who I’m becoming. I hope you don’t “end up,” I hope you keep going. And I hope you grow up knowing that the world will no longer stand for this. Victims are not victims, not some fragile, sorrowful aftermath. Victims are survivors, and survivors are going to be doing a hell of a lot more than surviving." Lots more.(link)
Can't say I've played Pokemon Go, but sounds like Ole Miss is leveraging the recent increased popularity in augmented reality gaming within its Rebel Rewards app. "The new AR game enables users to search for and locate AR football receivers at select locations both indoors and outside. Once located and connected through the app, throwing virtual passes to a receiver who catches them before he disappears earns the player Rebel Rewards points." More. (link); Another tech move comes from the America East as Binghamton will host the first ever hackathon sponsored at the league level. "HackAE" was the brainchild of the the America East Academic Consortium (AEAC). (link)
Also noticed: Notre Dame & Wake Forest are set to meet on the gridiron in Charlotte in 2020.(link); Oregon State's "Build the DAM" fundraising campaign concluded by exceeding its stated goal by 171%, version 2.0 is coming for the holidays. (link); Arizona & Kadho Sports will work together on neuroscience-based sports training. (link); Interesting tweet from ESPN MBB analyst Fraschilla: "Hard to believe but, since "one and done" came into effect in '06, only two National Champs have had one on roster: '12 UK & '15 Duke teams." (link)
