Meet the Brassica Family

This week we are introducing a new crop - Asian stir fry greens (as well as carrots!).  The variety is called Senposai, and it is a member of the extensive and illustrious brassica family.  Other relatives include broccoli, cabbage, radishes and bok choi.

What's so special about this family of vegetables?  It is the most widely consumed group of vegetables the world over.  Brassicas grow well in hot climates, dry climates, cool climates, wet climates, and have a short life cycle which makes them easy to breed and hybridize.  The brassicas we're growing right now include kale, arugula, senposai, bok choi, and about a dozen other Asian greens including mustards.  We rely on them for their quick growth, wide adaptability, and most importantly excellent taste and nutrition qualities.

Reason #4 to eat greens daily: Leafy greens, in particular kale, chard and mustards, are good sources of carotenoids that filter high energy light that may cause eye damage.  They decrease discomfort from glare and increase how far you can see.  Carotenoids are also associated with decreased cases of cataracts.

This week we have carrots, Asian stir fry greens, baby bok choi, arugula, bunched kale, mixed salad greens, lettuce and spinach for sale.

Rest assured, all of our products are triple washed and certified organic by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture.  We hope to feed you soon.

3" strip kelp, cut into thin ribbons

1 bunch greens such as bok choi, Asian stir fry greens, kale or cabbage
2 tablespoons miso paste
1. Bring water, kelp, ginger and carrots to a boil.
2. Once boiling, add noodles and greens.  When noodles are tender, remove from heat.
