SNIA Swordfish™ v1.0.2 Available for Public Review

The SNIA Scalable Storage Management (SSM) Technical Work Group (TWG) has been working to develop the new SNIA Swordfish™ specification at a record pace, and the 1.0.2 Work-in-Progress version is now ready for public review at http://www.snia.org/publicreview. This version includes documentation formatting improvements, clarifications, and updates for better compatibility with the DMTF Redfish specification.

An extension to the Distributed Management Task Force’s (DMTF) Redfish specification, SNIA Swordfish helps to provide a unified approach for the management of storage and servers in hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments, making it easier for IT administrators to integrate scalable solutions into their data centers.

Cloud Architecture in the Data Center and the Impact on the Storage Ecosystem: A Journey Down the Software Defined Storage Rabbit Hole

Cloud Architecture in the Data Center and the Impact on the Storage Ecosystem - Dan Maslowski
Today’s IT leaders can't satisfy the demand for storage capacity and performance at a reasonable cost using traditional methodologies. Hear how one enterprise embraced the software defined storage ecosystem to enable deployment at scale and at "cloud speed" to reduce both cost and complexity. You’ll learn benefits of software defined scale out storage solutions, lessons learned during global deployment, and the unique requirements of anenterprise-class massive scale financial services ecosystem.

Magic and Mystery of In-Memory Apps
November 8, 2016
Shaun Walsh, G2M Communications
Marty Foltyn, SNIA

Businesses are extracting value from more data, more sources and at increasingly real-time rates. Spark and HANA are just the beginning. This webcast details existing and emerging solutions for in-memory computing solutions that address this market trend and the disruptions that happen when combining big-data (Petabytes) with in-memory/real-time requirements. It provides an overview and trade-offs of key solutions (Hadoop/Spark, Tachyon, HANA, NoSQL-in-memory, etc) and related infrastructure (DRAM, Nand, 3D-crosspoint, NV-DIMMs, high-speed networking) and discusses the disruption to infrastructure design and operations when "tiered-memory" replaces "tiered storage"

Current State of Storage in the Container World
November 17, 2016
Eric Forgette, Nimble Storage
Chad Hintz, Cisco

The first wave of adoption of container technology was focused on micro services and ephemeral workloads. The next wave of adoption won’t be possible without persistent, shared storage. This webcast will provide an overview of Docker containers and the inherent challenge of persistence when containerizing traditional enterprise applications. We will then examine the different storage solutions available for solving these challenges and provide the pros and cons of each.

The 2017 Ethernet Roadmap for Networked Storage
December 1, 2016
Brad Booth, Microsoft
Vittal Balasubramani, Dell
John Kim, Mellanox
Brad Smith, Mellanox
Fred Zhang, Intel

The world of Ethernet in 2017 promises rapid change. With all the incredible advances and learning vectors, this webcast will highlight what’s in store for Ethernet in 2017, covering:

  • What’s driving adoption of faster Ethernet speeds and new Ethernet storage models
  • The different copper and optical cabling choices available at different speeds and distances
  • How other connectivity options will compete against Ethernet for cloud and software-defined storage networks
  • Planning for new connectivity options and 200 and 400 Gigabit Ethernet

Containers: Best Practices and Data Management Services
December 7, 2016
Keith Hudgins, Docker
Alex McDonald, NetApp

This webcast will take a deeper dive into what differentiates container technology from what you are used to with virtual machines (VMs). Containers can both complement VMs and also replace them as they promise the ability to scale exponentially higher. They can easily be ported from one physical server to another or to one platform—such as on-premise—to another—such as public cloud providers like Amazon AWS. In this webcast, we’ll explore “container best practices” that discuss how to address the various challenges around networking, security and logging. We’ll also look at what types of applications more easily lend themselves to a microservice architecture versus which applications may require additional investment to refactor/re-architect to take advantage of microservices.
