Dry Fresh Herbs in the Microwave

Outdoor herb gardens are a fantastic way to make sure that only the freshest flavors make it into your cooking, but picking and drying your whole crop before the first major frost can be a time consuming process. Drying your herbs in the microwave is a great option because it heats the water first, before the plant material, making it less likely that your herbs will start to toast or burn like they can in the oven. Just place your fresh herbs between two paper towels (to capture the escaping moisture) and microwave on high for 1 minute. Continue microwaving at 30 second intervals, checking to see how dry the herbs have become (different herb varieties and different microwaves require different lengths of time to dry fully). Dried herbs (whether dried from fresh, or store bought) generally retain their potency for about 6 months, so you can enjoy your winter supply until next year's crop rolls around!

Sprouts like alfalfa, mung bean and radish can be a delicious addition to your favorite salad or wrap, but many people are unaware that they can very easily spread foodborne illness. This is because the warm and moist conditions required to grow them are also perfect for the growth of bacteria like Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. Find out more at:
