President's Message

by Wayne Kitchen

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The coming year promises to bring many more challenges to those of us practising law in York Region.

Legal Aid is under fire.  The Criminal Courts are facing tight time lines.

Concerns grow over the length of time to obtain Trials in Civil matters.

Solicitors face their own challenges in meeting their client’s needs.

Over the next few months I anticipate the Association will be reaching out to our members for input into these and other issues that arise.  Please keep a look out for these notices and provide your input to myself or the Chair of the relevant committee:

They are:         1.         Family Law Committee - George van Hoogenhuize;
                        2.         Criminal Law Committee - Dan Mideo;
                        3.         Civil Law Committee  - Darryl Singer;
                        4.         Real Estate/Corporate Law Committee - Corinne Rivers;
                        5.         Legal Aid Committee - Norm Panzica;

On an upbeat note those of you who have been in the Library in the New Year will have noticed that the renovations are almost complete.  Larger new work stations are available to enable our members to better serve their clients.

Real Estate Update

Tarion has produced a a new warranty reference guide, targeted at real estate lawyers, that they have developed and have asked our help in distributing.  The brochure and corresponding blog post provide tips on what real estate lawyers need to know about the warranty and how to help their clients (you can access the brochure and blog by clicking on the underlined words).

Congratulations Madam Justice Amlin

Lorelei Mary Amlin was called to the bar in 1994. Justice Amlin's experience includes more than 20 years in litigation, and at one time, she was the senior federal prosecutor in Hamilton. As assistant Crown attorney on the Guns and Gangs initiative, she was team lead on large, complex projects. Justice Amlin has lectured on criminal organizations, complex cases, and search and seizure. Since 2016, she has been in private practice, prosecuting federal charges as an agent for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.

Justice Amlin sat on the board of the Community Development Council Durham, which deals with issues of homelessness, poverty, community development and social services. She is an annual participant in the Multiple Sclerosis Society Bike Tour and the Hamilton Around the Bay Road Race in support of St. Joseph's Hospital.

Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice Amlin to preside in Guelph.

Library Report

by Betty Dykstra

So the Library Festive Tree of Knowledge has been dismantled and the renovations are done (with the exception of buying some new chairs and some tidying up).  So far we have heard nothing but positive remarks, but we would love you to pop by and see them for yourself.

What exactly did we do ...

Well, we removed a lot of reporting series that were not being used or updated as we have access to them electronically, and the shelves that held them.   We changed the orientation of the remaining shelves and ensured that they would meet accessibility standards.  This freed up a lot of new space.

We had 3 new tables brought in for the side and 4 for the back of the room, put in a laptop bar along the full length of the north window with 7 new electrical outlets (2 with usb ports) and bumped out the copier area.   This will allow more people to work in the library, the ability to stand while working and with the additional space, be able to compile their court documents with ease.  Along with the new computers last year, I think that we have accomplished quite a bit.

We also have a new sound system in the Lounge for use when we do CPD's.  The 2 TV's have been linked so that you have a choice of screens to watch and our speakers will now be equipped with lapel microphones so that you can hear them crystal clear through the speakers in the ceiling.

All of these new features were made possible with your Association Membership Dues.  This would be a great time to remind you to pay for your 2017 fees if not already submitted.
