bestbet's Orange Park Derby

Only three races remain until we find out just who is going to be in the finals of the 2016 $50,000 Orange Park Derby, but those three races will be no cakewalk for any one of our competitors. The 7th, 9th, and 11th races tonight at bestbet Jacksonville are packed full of talent. Some can just cruise through the rounds and others will need to show up big time to have a chance to move on.

On tap we have stakes round winners, track record holders, stakes finalists, and even an All-American, so grab your bucks and head to the track and see if you can cash in on some of the best routers in the country this weekend.

Let’s take a closer look at the remaining races and see if I can pick you some winners.

Iowa Bred Consolation

The Iowa Bred Consolation is not even a race for second place. Heck, it is a race for ninth place, but “to win this is great,” said trainer Jeff Wilcox of the Wayne R. Ward Kennel.

“All of these greyhounds could have been in the (Iowa Breeders Cup) final,” said Wilcox. “Our owner (Gary Reicherts) is very happy with this win.”

The Consolation is open to the greyhounds that finished ninth through 16th in the points list after the four qualifying rounds of the Iowa Breeders Cup. The top eight in points run for the $145,000 prize, the next eight get to go in the Consolation.

The Ward Kennel’s O YA KAPOW took home the Consolation trophy.

“We were thrilled to go out to the track and pick up the trophy,” said Wilcox.

O YA KAPOW, an 80-pounder, born July 13, 2014 out of KC AND ALL and YA CRANBERRY, gave a box-to-wire performance from the six box.

Iowa Greyhound Association's Au Revoir

SUPERIOR YESY found herself at the right time. Yesy, a 64-pounder, born September 15, 2014, out of KIOWA MON MANNY and SUPERIOR LARUE, gave an impressive performance in winning the last race of the 2016 season at the Iowa Greyhound Park with a dominating performance in the IGA Au Revoir on Saturday, October 22.

The stakes was run over the Dubuque course where Yesy had “run very good early in the season,” said owner Alan Hill. “In fact she made the final of the Dubuque Course Classic, but she didn’t do anything in the final (as she finished last).”

All of a sudden “she didn’t have that early rush, so we put her over in the sprints,” explained Hill.

Patrons checking SUPERIOR YESY’s lines in the program would see she has won a couple of Grade A tests at the 5-16 mile distance. Then, the Au Revoir came up at the Dubuque distance and the kennel entered her.

"She was her old self today,” said Hill. “She had her old early rush.”

SUPERIOR YESY broke sixth from the three box, but got away clean and quickly bolted to a three-length lead.

In The Money at bestbet!

There are only two rounds left in the Orange Park Derby installment of our In The Money contest, which includes tonight's semi-finals. The previous round this last Monday, October 31st, kept point accrual to a minimum with some longshots hitting the board. The current standings are close, and right now anyone can come out on top.

Be sure to get your picks and wagers in for races 7, 9, and 11 at bestbet tonight! Remember that the final round on November 12th will be worth double the points!

Good luck to everyone playing!

Secretary's Choice

Trainer Norman Journigan of the Jackson Greyhounds Kennel was impressed.

“It takes a mighty good greyhound,” said Journigan, “to win (a stakes race) two years in a row.”

That is what his greyhound, SLATEX ELVIS, did Saturday, October 22, snaring his second consecutive Secretary’s Choice Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park.

The 2015 victory was doubly sweet. Besides the race trophy, the win gave Elvis the season’s victory championship at IGP. This year, Elvis, a 71-pounder, born July 30, 2013, out of KIOWA MON MANNY and SLATEX PLUTO, came to the boxes with just a 26-4-8-4 record. He spent the 2015-2016 winter season in Florida and the time there could have been better.

Iowa Breeders' Cup

Timing is everything. RF RIVER made an early lead stand up on the way to a length’s triumph in the $145,000 Iowa Breeders Cup Stakes at the Iowa Greyhound Park on Saturday, October 22.

“He is peaking at the right time,” said co-owner (along with Joni Recinos) Alan Hill. “He’s peaked in his last couple of races.”

Hill was pointing to River’s wins in the last two qualifying rounds of the IBC where he took early leads and won comfortably by three and four lengths. Looking back, putting RF RIVER, a 68-pounder, born December 28, 2014, out of KC AND ALL and AF NALA, in the IBC was a no brainer.

Howl-O-Ween Stakes at Derby Lane

The finish couldn’t have been any tighter and, with one final surge, ABS SO HARD won the inaugural running of the $10,000 Howl-O-Ween Stakes on Monday afternoon, October 31, at Derby Lane. It was the first stakes victory for ABS SO HARD and first at St. Petersburg for Tri-State kennel owner Lonnie Boyle, whose operation joined the track roster on July 1.

ABS SO HARD, who holds the meet’s best 550-yard clocking at 30.23 seconds, overcame a wide trip to defeat HALLO FRENCH GIG of Pauline O’Donnell kennel by a nose in 30.86 seconds. Trained by Michael Klingbeil for owner John Melillo, ABS SO HARD rounded the first turn in fourth place while running in the 4-path and moved into third entering the final turn. The pace-setting HALLO FRENCH GIG went a bit wide in the stretch, allowing ABS SO HARD to move inside for his decisive charge.
