Hello Chamber Managers!

The team and I have enjoyed tic-tac-toe’ing around BC to meet with you and your boards – most recently in Kelowna and Vernon! Your energy and passion for what you do is inspiring: whether it’s standing up to speak on the importance of affordable housing and skills training, or on liquor law reform (…yes, Vernon, I’m talking about YOU), there can be no doubt that it’s B.C.’s regional chambers that #GetItDone.

Please stay tuned for an Area Meeting summary from me in the coming weeks when we’ve completed our tour, but a few themes are beginning to emerge which is exciting. I have noticed that heads seem to nod vigorously when we talk about “keeping it congruent”, “focusing on the experience – not the transaction”, “we must know our tribe”, “playing to our strengths & learn some new moves” – and “take the lead”.

We have a “leadership moment” right now, in fact. Our Collective Perspective survey is live and we hope you will help us drive member responses so we can share those brilliant business insights with our government.

Please find the link to the survey here and ensure YOUR REGION is represented in the data set by sending this link to your members. Of course, we look forward to giving this data back to you, so you can deliver these great insights to your members, Mayor & council, and valued partners. It takes a village, as they say, so thank you in advance for your engagement with this important initiative.

'Collective Perspective' survey - We need your help!

We're seeing a great response so far, and appreciate all Chamber's efforts in spreading the word about the Collective Perspective survey.

But, we're not done yet! Let's keep the ball rolling so we can reach our goal of a 10% response rate - that’s 3,600 members!

It is imperative that all regions of the province to have equal voice and representation in the results of this survey, so let’s rally our tribe together over the next week to ensure that every single one of our members has a chance to give their take.

Our short 10-minute survey can be found using this link: http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/abacus/bc-chamber-of-commerce/.

The survey closes on November 4, 2016.

Chamber Leaders in Action:
Louise Ranger, North Vancouver Chamber

Reinventing the Chamber as an economic development office

The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce has recently had a facelift. Their outdated logo, featuring three large mountains, has been replaced with a sleek, multi-coloured sphere and modern font for a cleaner, more modern look. They also dropped the ‘of commerce’ from the end of their name.

“We really wanted our new logo to reflect the unique assets of North Vancouver, such as the mountains, rivers and waterfront,” explained Louise Ranger, the North Vancouver Chamber’s CEO for the past four years. “We also wanted a slight First Nations art feel to it, to express our respect and our geographical connection. We are thrilled with the end result.”

There’s more to the logo redesign than just a fresh new look. It also signals a pivot the Chamber made to take on the role as the economic development office for North Vancouver.

Youth Trades Training program

Did you know…Industry Training Authority has a robust lineup of youth trades training programs to get kids to start thinking about trades as early as Grade 5?

On September 22, the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the B.C. government unveiled the updated Youth Trades Training program at Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam. The Honourable Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, and Gary Herman, CEO, ITA, and Coquitlam School District officials spoke to the value of early exposure to trades and encouraged students to think of trades training as their next step in post-secondary education.

The refreshed program names show a clear path from early learnings to apprenticeship and certification—Discover, Explore, Train and Work. The updates come as a result of extensive research that surveyed students, parents, educators and industry, which indicated a need for a streamlined path and earlier access to trades.

Announced in the 2016 provincial budget, ITA received an additional $7.8 million from the B.C. government, which will help implement the programs and increase the number students enrolling in trades programs as well as get them thinking about trades careers throughout their school years. This aligns with the goals set out in BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint to get more students involved in trades training.

Visit www.itabc.ca/youth for more details about the expanded programs.
