A Foster Parent's Tale of Doggie Love
I've been fostering for about 19 years. Some fosters have been easy, other not so much. Some were heartbreaking. I've fostered 5 or 6 litters of pups. I've had young dogs, old dogs, sick dogs, little and big dogs. I've fostered some for a couple of days, some for months and some for years. Some we finally adopted because they had been with us for so long. A couple my husband never let me take to adoption events. He'd say, "they don't want to go today". Many have been fostered after surgeries, treatment for cancer or taken care of, when at the end of their lives all we could do was to give them the love and the care they deserved.
Off the top of my head I'd say I've fostered somewhere between 75 & 100 dogs. Maybe more. Some people say they can't foster because it's heartbreaking. Is it worth the heart break? Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but what would have happened to all those dogs if someone didn't say yes, I'll take them home. Is it rewarding? Absolutely! Especially when their new family bring them in for a visit or sends us pictures and you see how happy they are.
I will always remember my first foster. Her name was Doja. She was perfect. She was a big red mutt. Sweet and smart. She got along with my own dogs right away. When the new family came to adopt her it was as if someone stuck a knife in my heart. I was crying so hard I couldn't catch my breath. The couple was so understanding, they told me they would take another dog if I wanted to keep her. I told them I couldn't because I already had 3 dogs (years later I found out 3 is just a suggestion,Haha). The couple told me I could come a visit her whenever I wanted and I did, several times a week until, in my mind, I knew she was happy. It didn't take long before I had another foster that would steal my heart.
There are the occasional foster that floods your house by chewing on the toilet tank tubes or the one that tries to bite everyone that comes to the door. One thing we long time fosters have learned is that things can be replaced and friends that judge you and your dogs aren't much of a friend.
There is always a little soul that needs you and there is always a volunteer around to tell you who needs you the most.
Foster, it's good for your heart.️
Besides fostering, the foster parent above is a long time CARL volunteer who is actively involved in adoption events, the annual pooch parade, and many more activities.

Fostering
Did the above article "A Foster Parent's Tale of Doggie Love" tug at your heart and pique your interest in fostering? Canine Adoption and Rescue League uses volunteers in its foster home system.
Canine Adoption and Rescue League relies on a network of “foster homes” to provide a safe and loving environment while they await adoption into their permanent homes.
Canine Adoption and Rescue League provides each foster family with food, vet care, and training assistance, as necessary. The only thing the foster family needs to provide is a loving and nurturing home environment for the dog.
One of the major benefits of “foster” care, as opposed to the traditional shelter, is that the dogs/puppies are being socialized in the environments into which they are being adopted.
Foster care also gives us the ability to provide prospective adopters with a very accurate profile of the prospective “adoptee”, regarding general temperament; house breaking; socialization level with other dogs, cats, and children; whether or not the dog is a jumper, digger, or chewer, etc.
Such daily care and close observation also provides us with the opportunity to address behavioral problems before they become too instilled.
Becoming a Foster Parent
The only requirement to be a Canine Adoption and Rescue League foster family is a love of animals, a dedication to helping those who cannot help themselves, and a safe and secure home environment.
Please contact us about being a foster parent. It can be a very rewarding experience for the foster and the dog. You can help Canine Adoption and Rescue League fulfill its goal!

The Training of CARL Dogs
CARL has worked with multiple dog trainers over the years and over the past two years we have been privileged to work with Tyler Austin. Tyler is owner and chief trainer of The Noble Dog in Camarillo. He has been deeply involved his whole life raising and working with dogs. He has always enjoyed obedience training and during the past several years has focused professionally on dog behavioral modification. His expertise and calm demeanor have made all the difference at CARL. In addition to assisting volunteer walkers gain confidence and learn effective dog handling skills, Tyler has also worked one-on-one with some of our dogs that required assistance in overcoming behavioral issues.
Some comments made by the volunteers that attended training this month with Tyler were:
“I learned to: a) Stay confident and, b) Never to back down with a dog (if you give a command, mean it and follow through)”.
“I learned that the quality of a walk is sometimes more important than quantity. For example, taking the time to really work with 2 dogs on leash manners; walking calmly, etc, instead of trying to get as many dogs out regardless of their behavior. Also I feel more confident providing gentle corrections with the slip lead. It seems that the dogs catch on quickly to the behavior we are looking for (not pulling!) using the techniques Tyler showed us. I am also more confident in knowing how to enter a super excited dog’s kennel (Here’s looking at you Bentley)! I was shown and practiced how to help dogs stay calm with positive reinforcement, reading their body language (Bentley trying to push toward the door, etc) and knowing how to respond to that”.
“Overall, SUPER helpful!!! I hope to come again when Tyler is out there!”
“Great training”. “Kudos to Tyler for sharing his time and knowledge with us”.

Carl Walking:
Walking dogs at CARL Pet Care Center is great exercise. It is also a warm and heart- felt activity that walkers and CARL Dogs alike look forward to. The dogs rely on walkers to break up the monotony of their days living in enclosed and often small spaces. When walkers interact with CARL Dogs their enthusiastic welcome is displayed by wagging tails, ear-to-ear dog smiles, warm kisses and gentle nudges. We dog lovers will return time after again for these precious gifts!
In order for volunteers to walk at CPCC, the guidelines require a lead walker to be present. Last year we had 2 regular lead walkers during the week and a few on the weekend. Adam G. and I covered during the week and Jim M. and Kristin V covered Sat mornings. Until recently Dan E. and Christina H. covered Sundays. (We no longer have Sunday walking due to lack of available walkers on this day).
This year Ayla S, Brionna M , and Ruben A volunteered and trained to become lead walkers. As a result we have been able to provide more walking times throughout the week and on Sat. If a Lead is absent due to illness or is unavailable, we now have leads that can fill this void instead of canceling walking for that day. With more lead coverage, more dogs are getting out than ever before. Thanks to all the Lead Walkers for you teamwork and efforts!
At CARL we have a pretty regular and consistent group of walkers whom the dogs rely on for their social and entertainment needs. You are: Ann W, Beth D, Betty S, Brad N, Cathy S, Connie G, Darryl A, Don F, Jean F, Jill P, J’Nell L, Jon G, Kai E, Laura V, Linda M, Lisa L, Liz O, Matt S, Mary M, Marion T, Marsha M, Mike V, Paula A, Renee W, Rosemary L, Rob, Saybrie S, Sara Joy C and Tierce C. (our newest walkers are Alyssa A, Linda C and Tish D.) If I missed anyone please accept my sincere apology!
These walkers are often engaged in other helpful activities at the Center. A few examples of this include: Marsha and Sara Joy making dog bone shaped popsicles for the dogs in the hot weather, Rob and J’Nell L. assisting with facility maintenance activities like gardening and other repairs, and Darryl A who consistently purchases and stocks our much needed dog treats at the volunteer station.
(This is by no means an exhaustive list; these are just a few examples of additional walker volunteer contributions at CPCC).
This is truly a great group of volunteers whose primary purpose is to help the CARL Dogs! Their priceless gift of time has made all the difference .
Direct Dog Care Team does Walking, Transportation, Playgroups, Socialization, C.A.R.L. Off-Site Training Program, Washing & Grooming, Special Needs & Training of the CARL dogs.
