A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

Welcome November and “winter time” as the United States change the clocks to winter time this Sunday November 6, though I think it still feels like summer in Los Angeles. However, if you want to experience snow and winter right here in sunny LA, you can actually do so by visiting “Snow! Los Angeles.”  And since we are in November most of us are starting to think of the upcoming holiday seasons, SACC-LA member IKEA Burbank have started their popular Holiday tent sale and if you are a Swede, you might also enjoy the clip of this year’s “Julkalender” a bit further down in this week’s Finally Friday.

As we are indeed located in the U.S., we are of course following the up-coming election that is taking place this Tuesday November 8th. And if you do have the privilege to vote, I would encourage everyone to make his or her voice heard. It is truly amazing what one vote can do when you add up the millions of “ones.” I believe everyone have the opportunity to make a difference, every day, so please do.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”  –Wayne Gretzky

      Happy Friday!
      Gudrun Giddings
      President of SACC-LA

The United States may be the world’s oldest continuous democracy, but experience does not equal enthusiasm. In its most recent national election, the U.S. had the ninth-lowest voting rate among the 35 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

There are many important and different reasons of why you should vote. The Huffington Post mentions 7 reasons to vote in the U.S. election on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016. Please view the article to read the entire list.

Pope Francis of the Roman-Catholic church was visiting Sweden this past Monday, October 31st. It was the second time ever a pope has visited Sweden - last time was in 1989 - and the agenda for the day was for the pope to participate in an ecumenical service at Lund Cathedral, then an an ecumenical event at the Malmö Arena which both marks the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the reformation. The Local was reporting every minute of the day, read about the whole day here.

Josefine: "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome

Published in 1889, this might seem like an aged book - but the humor and wit is ageless. The story is about three friends and a dog who set out on a highly amusing trip down the Thames in England. According to the writer, the book was initially meant as a serious travel guide for those who wanted to travel from Kingston to Oxford - but the book changed purpose when the very funny and unforseen events of the trip took over the story. This book is truly uplifting - although it was 8 years ago I read this book, it haven't left my mind. If you got your appetite wetted, there is a sequel called "Three Men on Wheels" where they set out on another adventure, this time on velocipedes.

Jennifer: "50 Shades of Grey" by E.L. James

As I truly love to read books and have plowed through many different books over the years, I find it very hard to pick one single favorite book of mine. Julia's favorite Harry Potter is definitely an all-time favorite of mine as well, but if I were to pick a more recent book I have to go with "50 Shades of Grey" (2011) - the controversial erotic love story that probably everyone has heard about. The book is written by E.L. James and "50 Shades of Grey" is the first book in the trilogy about Anastasia Steele, the 21-year old college student who fells in love with Christian Grey, a young business magnate. The two of them are in very different places of what they want in a relationship, which results in a complicated but fun and heart-warming story throughout the three books.

Emma: "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger

A classic and one of my favorites. Although I write a lot my self, it is hard to get even close to understand how Salinger creates such a presence with his language and the characters. We meet a sixteen year old, native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The story deals with the complex issues of innocence, identity, loss and belonging. It is written youthful but yet mature, insightful if you like, and the honesty of protagonist’s inner thoughts hits you like a punch in the stomach. A must read.

Julia: "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling

I thought hard and long to come up with something else than Harry Potter but the truth is that I think the fantasy serie written by J.K Rowling is outclassing everything else. I have read all of the seven books approximately five times each both in Swedish, English and French. I doubt you haven’t heard about the story in someway, anyhow it’s about an orphan wizard named Harry Potter and his two best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. You follow their life during their years enrolled at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story concerns Harry’s struggle against the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. If you only have watched the movies, you have not yet discovered the whole world of Harry Potter and I strongly advice you to read the books as well.
