Pure replaces Metis

Pure will replace Metis mid-November as registration system for research and publications. The scheduled release for Pure is November 23rd, but the Metis data input will be frozen on 18 November. This date is particularly important for those researchers who use the Metis function to suppress publications on their personal UvA profile page. This will be added to Pure in a later stage due to a needed UvA Web Hippo CMS update. Therefore it is crucial for those who use this feature to make sure you have updated your selection before Metis is shut for new input. Please read more about this important change on the UvA Library website.

Historians Present at 'Avond van Wetenschap & Maatschappij'

ASH members Geert Janssen, Rosanne Baars, and Josephine van den Bent attended the Night of Science & Society in the Ridderzaal. Prominent scholars and junior researchers were asked to present their research by means of thought-provoking arguments in order to stimulate a lively discussion at the dinner table. (Photo by Frank van Driel)

The Dutch Golden Age: During the evening Geert Janssen and Rosanne Baars questioned the 'Dutchness' of the Dutch golden age. Society still celebrates an idealized past which is characterized by nationalist overtones. Janssen and Baars stressed the importance of migration to Dutch culture at the time.

The Historical Caliphate: At another table, Maaike van Berkel (RU) and Josephine van den Bent talked about the historical Islamic caliphate. In the current struggle against ISIS, which claims to be a continuation of this institution, a proper understanding of the past realities of the historical caliphate is key in both understanding ISIS's claims and in countering these. Van den Bent previously published an article on this topic in De Groene Amsterdammer, while Van Berkel is a leading expert on the Abbasid caliphate.
History of Humanities

Published: the Fall issue of "History of Humanities"

History of Humanities, along with the newly formed Society for the History of the Humanities, takes as its subject the history of a wide variety of disciplines including archaeology, art history, historiography, linguistics, literary studies, musicology, philology, and media studies, tracing these fields from their earliest developments, through their formalization into university disciplines, and to the modern day.
By exploring the history of humanities across time and civilizations and along with their socio-political and epistemic implications, the journal takes a critical look at the concept of humanities itself.

Geert Janssen and Michael Portillo BBC

Geert Janssen in Great Continental Railway Journeys (BBC)

Michael Portillo wonders what a tourist travelling to Amsterdam a hundred years ago was likely to see. Geert Janssen explains that Amsterdam did not get the typical 19th century facelift (as Paris and London did) and therefore the character of the 17th century Golden Age was still visible. You can watch the full episode on YouTube. Geert Janssen makes his appearance after around 38 minutes.

We will compare his vision of the country to "eyewitness" illustrations of Formosan natives published in Olfert Dapper's Gedenkwaerdig bedryf der Nederlandsche Oost-Indische maetschappye, op de kuste en in het keizerrijk van Taising of Sina (1670) as well as in other places. This will also lead to a related question of how, during the course of the eighteenth century, all East Asians became lumped together into a new racial category called the "Mongolian."

Michael Keevak is a professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at National Taiwan University.

Reading by Professor Elizabeth Buettner

Resurfacings: Memories of Empire in Postcolonial Europe
15 November 17.00 Amsterdamse Academische Club

Memories of the past are never static: they continually evolve in the aftermath of the events and issues being remembered, and are apt to wax and wane in terms of their presence in public culture. Postcolonial Western Europe's imperial histories have, by turns, proven the subjects of recollection, nostalgia, critique, and amnesia. In this light Elizabeth Buettner will discuss overseas empires which came to an end using Belgium and the former Belgian Congo as a case study.
