Hi <<First Name>>,

Here comes the holiday season, and everyone is making their list and checking it twice. We at Olivia’s like to make sure that the healthy food we serve reaches its fullest flavor potential. So, on the top of our list is food preparation.

Before you take a stab at that new scrumptious-sounding but slightly scary holiday recipe, let’s take a step back and talk about some culinary basics that will help simplify every cooking experience. Here are some of our favorite kitchen hints we know will make the top of your holiday list.

Snow the Seasoning: Whether it’s a whole turkey or a few pieces of roasted chicken, make sure you’re seasoning meat and fish evenly. The best way to ensure you’ve done this is to think of it as “snowing” – covering the landscape with a nice even coat of salt and pepper snow. This will help eliminate clumping and over-seasoned or under-seasoned spots.
Get Prepped: Failing to prepare is preparing to fail – well, that’s a bit serious, but you know what we mean! Anything you can do the day or night before – chopping, shredding, blending, marinating – do it! This will keep stress to a minimum and allow you to focus on the actual cooking. Plus, it leaves a little more time to have fun with your holiday guests!
Fill It with Flavor: This is a double-time hint. Apple pies, roasted butternut squash and hearty veggies are the foods of the season thanks to the spices and herbs of the season. Keep your spices fresh and ready to use by storing them in a cool place (not the cupboard above the microwave!). And, when you’re about to chop those fresh herbs, toss some salt on the cutting board. It will help keep the herbs in place so you can get a quick and even chop every time.
What are some of your special tips for making holiday cooking a breeze? Do you rely on your freezer for prep or an extra set of hands day of? What is that secret trick your grandpa taught you that is just genius? We want to hear from you! Send us your favorite holiday hints and a photo of you in action to teamolivias@oliviasorganics.org for a chance to be featured in the next Olivia’s Open Mic spotlight.

Thanks for being part of the Olivia’s family!
