In this issue:
Dear Parents & Families,

If you can believe it, we are less than a month away from the last day of classes for the fall semester.  Whether your student is in their first year or their last, he/she is probably getting anxious about final exams, papers, projects, plus selecting classes for the spring.

If you did not know, registration for the Spring Semester opened this week.  Priority registration is from November 7 to November 18 for current UTC students and on November 21 for transfer or readmitted students.  If your student hasn't already done so, he/she needs to meet with their academic advisor.  Their advisor can assist with picking classes to ensure they are on track to complete the necessary requirements for their chosen degree. During these meetings, your student can also find out if they are eligible for priority registration and will receive their registration pin number (this is a MUST HAVE). Students with double majors may have to meet with more than one advisor, so it's important to get a meeting scheduled as soon as possible!

Families who understand the flow of an academic year can effectively aid their student through these challenges.  Encourage your Moc to make good decisions and utilize campus resources such as their academic advisor, the UTC Counseling & Personal Development Center, and the Center for College and Student Success.

You can also direct your student to us in the Office of the Dean of Students.  We are here anytime for you and your student, so don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need assistance.  You can reach us by phone at (423) 425 – 2321 or you can contact me directly at utcparents@utc.edu

Take care,
Emelia Dunston
Associate Dean of Students

November 16 - Mindful Experimentation

Calling all UTC Singers! The Department of Music has openings in all UTC choral ensembles for Spring 2017. Men’s Chorus (MUS 0027) and Women’s Chorale (MUS 0026) require no audition. Chattanooga Singers (MUS 0020) and Chamber Singers (MUS 0022) require an audition. There is nothing to prepare and the audition will just last about 4 minutes. Both choruses have openings for all male voice parts.

Contact Jordan Hicks at Jordan-Hicks@utc.edu or visit http://www.utc.edu/music/ensemble/index.php for more information.

Does Your UTC Student Have Experience?
More than any other factor, employers are more likely to follow up on entry-level resumes that show relevant experience through an internship or practicum. Yes, a solid GPA and being active on campus are great, but encouraging your child to put their academic knowledge to work may be the best advice you can provide. UTC has many resources your student can turn to in order to identify such experiential opportunities. Reach out to your child and suggest they speak with their academic department’s leadership or their career advisor to find out more.

Because, after all, you might want to use their bedroom for other purposes :-).

Parents and Family Members,

Are you trying to think of gift ideas for the quickly approaching graduations and holidays? The Career & Student Employment Center has several ideas of gifts which will assist your student as he or she meets the professional world outside of UTC, whether it be through an internship, a campus career fair, or a job interview.  Ideas include:
  1. A portfolio to hold resumes before handing them out.
  2. A shirt and tie.
  3. A blazer which would make a pants and shirt or a dress or skirt look more professional.  We are not ruling out a suit as a gift either.
  4. A pair of closed toe shoes with a professional heel height.
Our TWO Spring Career Days will be Wednesday, February 1, 2017 for STEM positions and Thursday, February 2, 2017 for Business, Retail, Government & Other positions.  Over 100 employers attended the Fair this past spring. Based on their survey responses, we know professional appearance is a major category for them.  Help your student start planning now to “dress to impress.”

We wish you a special time with your students,

The UTC Career & Student Employment Center

Just in time for Thanksgiving, UTC Theatre Company presents Hay Fever, the ultimate family holiday gone wrong.

Noel Coward’s Hay Fever is a comedic masterpiece that has left audiences roaring since it was first produced in 1925. The farce revolves around the antics of celebrated actress Judith Bliss, her novelist husband David and their two bohemian children, Simon and Sorel. Each of the Blisses invites a guest to join them at their family country home for the weekend without telling the others. What was meant to be a relaxing weekend away turns into a family feud that leaves the Bliss family guests fearing for their sanity.

UTC Theatre Company presents Hay Fever in the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre, in UTC’s Fine Arts Center. The show will run November 15-19 at 7:30 p.m. with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on November 19. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Center box office by phone at (423) 425-4269 or in person. Tickets are also available to purchase at utc.edu/finearts. Tickets are $12 General Admission and $10 for students and seniors.
