From the Principal

As we prepare the 2017 budget I felt there are a few things our community should be aware of. Breaking with tradition, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has decided not to inflation adjust our operating expenses. That wipes about $38 000 off our operating budget. No explanation accompanies this – it is just done.

For 2017 they have introduced a new grant component for what they have termed "at-risk students". The MOE will now calculate how many at-risk students they think we have and then give us a proportional grant.

The Minister of Education has said the money is being targeted at students from families on long term welfare, as evidence shows they are one of the biggest groups at risk of not being successful at school. That means that 99.4 percent of eligible schools will be getting at-risk student funding.

For Long Bay College, the MOE tells us we have 147 students in this category and are giving us $13 650. That equates to $92.85 per at-risk student. However, we don’t know who those students are because we are not told. Even if we did, I am not sure that $93 will make much difference to the education of that student.

It is “extra money” according to the Minister. My reading is that we are actually facing an overall loss of $24 350, and if we relate that to our at-risk students we have a net loss of $165.65 per student. $24 350 is about 35% of a full time teacher – and we will now have to cover that ourselves.

With the teacher shortage in New Zealand, schools have to turn to teacher recruitment companies who are sourcing excellent teachers out of the UK. A great service – but it has substantial costs which are not funded by the MOE. In other words, the cost of teacher supply is being passed onto schools which is effectively another loss for our budget.

We will face an operation deficit of about half a million dollars. Yes – we have a wide curriculum, fantastic staff, a rich co-curricular programme and high achievement. Thanks to school donations and our International Student programme (which benefits the school massively as a community and is valued by our International Students because they do so well at LBC) we can cover this deficit and steadily keep improving our school.

Community Fun Day

On Saturday 26 November Long Bay College will be holding a Community Fun Day from 11am to 2pm.

There will be crafts, games, face painting, food and music. Many activities will have a cultural theme, such as Chinese cooking demonstrations, flax weaving and henna. All activities will be in and around T block and will just cost a gold coin donation.

Please come along and bring your friends & family – all ages are very welcome. We’d love to see you there.

ASB Bright Sparks

Two Long Bay College Electronics students were amongst the finalists at the National ASB Bright Sparks Competition this month.

Year 11 student Ben Fletcher came 3rd in the Engineering category (against mostly Year 13 students from around New Zealand), and won the People’s Choice Award, decided by online voting throughout NZ for his Fishing Torpedo - an invention used to drop a fishing line out to sea from the beach.

Hayden Schimdt (Year 9) won the Engineering (Junior) category with his invention “Tech Grip” - a device that is used by Hand Therapists to determine improvement in grip strength after a hand injury. Hayden also got 2nd place for both the Science and Software category

A fantastic effort by both students, well done!

Rebekah Walton

Congratulations to Rebekah Walton who was a finalist in the 2016 Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition, and won herself time in a professional recording studio.

The talented Year 12 musician entered her song “Sing me to sleep” in the national competition, which has hundreds of secondary school students submit entries in the hope of winning studio time to have their song recorded and included on the annual Play it Strange CD. Play It Strange is a trust established to encourage young musicians to develop skills and interests in songwriting. It was founded in 2004 by Mike Chunn of Split Enz.

Rebekah went to Roundhead Studios over the October school holidays and had the Jade String Quartet from the Auckland Philharmonica come along to record the string arrangement in her song. The Play it Strange album will be available later this year on www.bandcamp.com.

Careers Week

Students flocked to the lunchtime sessions of our Careers Week, held in the second week of Term 4. This event showcased study and employment opportunities in construction and supporting services, sport, information technology, design, tourism, hospitality, beauty therapy, student exchange and much more.

The Trade's Day, represented by BCITO, MITO, WorkChoice, Connexis, NZ Marine, Primary Industries and others, proved to be very popular with our students looking into prospects of apprenticeships. This event was most beneficial to our senior students who stand uncertain of their next step into the workplace and the world outside of school.

Future Problem Solving

This was the first year Long Bay College has taken part in Future Problem Solving. Four teams competed in the qualifying exams, and the Year 11 team were selected for the National Finals held recently at Carey Park, Henderson.

The Year 11 team of Blair McIntosh, Jess Stern, Jayde Simpson and Marissa Ford placed third in New Zealand for Global Issues Problem Solving in the Senior category (Year 11-13). This is an outstanding result, and reflects the critical thinking ability, calmness under pressure and creativeness of this team.

Young Designer Awards

The tradition of excellence in Design and Visual Communication continues at Long Bay College. For well over a decade, students of this subject have gained some of the top awards in national competitions and earn mostly excellence and merit grades in NCEA.

The Young Designer Awards is an annual, prestigious national design competition for secondary school students, held in Christchurch and judged by a panel of industry experts.

Working from a given design brief in a range of categories, two Year 10 students were recently awarded some of the top places in this competition.

Music Concerts

On Sunday 16th October and Monday 17th October the Music department held their final two concerts for the year. The annual Long Bay Baptist Concert is now in its 8th year and a chance for all the major ensembles to perform their repertoire for the one of the final times.

The Long Bay Baptist Concert was followed a day later by the “Morning Melodies Concert” held at the Bruce Mason Theatre. Over 500 people attended this performance.

The Concert Band, Big Band, Chamber Orchestra, Massed Choir and Voxette all received excellent feedback from audience members at each event. Well done!

Monetary Policy

Congratulations to Wiremu Smith, Canon Delaney, Savannah Schreuder, Josiah Mathew and Ethan Laby on gaining Merit in the Monetary Policy Challenge. Well done also to Shaun Watt, Cameron Duffield, Savannah Schreuder and Josiah Mathew for gaining Distinction in the University of Auckland Economics competition.

Xmas Lights

Former Long Bay College student Tate Dooner is putting on an extraordinary Christmas Light Display in Torbay and raising money for Starship Childrens' Hospital. From the 15-25 December the BIGGEST Christmas Light Display on the North Shore can be seen in Killarney Ave.

Alumni Day

Earlier in the term Long Bay College held its annual Alumni Day where former students took on the current top teams in Netball, Cricket, Football and Volleyball. It was a great day had by all and wonderful to see some old faces here at the College.

Car Boot Sale

Long Bay Primary School is holding a Car Boot Sale and Gala tomorrow (Friday 18 November) from 5-8pm.

There will be a sausage sizzle and lots of other yummy food, miniature horse rides, raffles and lots of great items to purchase. All funds raised are going towards more iPads for the classrooms in 2017.

NASA 2016

Over the October school holidays, 32 keen students began their journey on the Long Bay College NASA physics trip. The students had two long plane rides before finally arriving in Florida. The next four days were spread between Universal Studios and Cape Canaveral, the home of Americas space programme. Along with the rockets and rollercoaster, the students were involved with surfing Cocoa Beach, simulated skydiving, air boating through the Florida swamps, learning about Native American culture, and of course, lots of shopping. A huge thanks to Smithy, Mrs Ross and Miss Davis for organising an unforgettable adventure.

Rugby Raffle

Next year the Long Bay College Girls Rugby 7s team are heading to New Caledonia to compete in an international tournament.

To fundraise they are selling raffle tickets with some huge prizes. 1st prize is a 60” Panasonic LED TV and a La-Z-Boy Recliner as well as 9 other prizes totalling well over $5000. The draw will be made on December 16 under police supervision and all winners will be contacted as well as results posted on the Long Bay College Facebook page.

The girls would really love your support, tickets can be purchased from the Sports Office for $15. There are only 500 tickets to be sold so don't miss out on a great chance to win.

Elizaveta Zyuzina

Congratulations to Year 12 student Elizaveta Zyuzina who won the 2nd Trusts Prize in the 16-18 year old Art Category for her oil painting "The Dawn".

Year 13 Leavers

On Friday 4 November we celebrated our Year 13 Leavers. While the sun didn't shine quite as much as we would've liked, it certainly didn't dampen spirits. Long Bay College would like to wish all its Year 13 students the best of luck in their upcoming exams and future adventures in the years ahead.

Trampolining

Madeleine Houston and Brendan Bekker were selected for the New Zealand Trampoline team to compete at the Indo Pacific World Champs recently in Auckland.

Madeleine achieved the following results:

Gymnastics

Congratulations to our students who competed at the North Harbour Schools Gym Competition last weekend. The team had some fantastic individual results that resulted in Long Bay College winning the Top School Teams Trophy. Well done!

Water Polo

Congratulations to Frankie Myers who has been selected in the born 1999 NZ Water Polo squad.

Kayla Allison-Carnie and Aleysha Ingram have been selected to trial for the NZ Water Polo team born 2002 (essentially NZ U15 team). It is a particularly good achievement for both of them as they actually have 2003 birthdays.

All of these players as well as Tessa de Jong Gordon have been selected as members of the NZ Water Polo Regional Training Centre as part of the NZ Water Polo High Performance programme.

Lauren Crowhurst

Congratulations to Year 13 student Lauren Crowhurst who represented the Auckland Regional Team at the New Zealand Junior Nationals Competition recently.

Lauren won all her games and was part of the Girls team and the Mixed team, both of which won first place. Well done!

Hayden Druce

Following the National Championships in July, and the recently held National Talent Development camp, congratulations to Hayden Druce who has been selected for the final U17 trials in December for the future Junior Tall Blacks. Good luck Hayden!

Cheerleading

Congratulations to the newly formed Long Bay College Cheer Team who competed in the Cheer Brandz International ( Australia) competition at North Shore Events Centre in the weekend and won a silver medal.

Hannah Harland and Jack Hibberd have represented New Zealand in the World Games in America; both of them are international champions. However, most of the team have never cheered before, so they really did an amazing job. Well done!

Surf Lifesaving

Congratulations to Conor McDermott and Josh Sanderson who competed in the weekend in New Zealand's Surf Lifesaving Pool Champs and came 2nd in the 4 x 50m obstacle relay and 3rd in the 4 x 50m medley relay. Well done to you both!

Indoor Volleyball

In the holidays 6 of our Long Bay College students were selected for North Harbour Indoor Volleyball Representative Teams to compete in the three day Inter Provincial Championship held at the Trust Stadium in Henderson. 28 Teams from 10 Associations competed for these National Titles.

Jordan Laumatia-Drabble was a key player in the Under 17 North Harbour side who beat Canterbury 3 – 0 in the semi-final and also beat Bay of Plenty 3- 0 in the final to win Gold and the National Under 17 Mens Title. This team was the only North Harbour side of 6 North Harbour sides to successfully win one of the Divisions.

Year 11 student James Watson was strong player in the Under 17 North Harbour Development side who finished 8th in the Under 17 Section.

Maddison Moore and Brittany Allison-Carnie were members of the North Harbour Under 17 Team who finished 2nd in the Final to a strong Bay of Plenty side.

Hannah Davenport and Caitlin Gough were members of the North Harbour Development side who finished 10th in the Under 17 Girls Division.

Beach Volleyball

Long Bay College had some outstanding results from the North Harbour Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Championships held in September. They are as follows

This is the first time in several years that we have won the Senior Boys Title and the first time ever we have won the Senior Girls Title since this Tournament began in 2004.

Cameron Baker

Congratulations to Year 13 student Cameron Baker who competed at the New Zealand National Judo Championships on the weekend in Auckland.

Cameron competed in the U81kg Junior Men Division and won GOLD, so he is now the New Zealand National Champion!!

Cameron also competed in the Open Weight Division for Junior Men and won BRONZE. He also received his Black Belt in Judo at the same time.

Fantastic results from Cameron after another competitive year of Judo competitions where he has won numerous Gold and Silver medals. Well done!!
