Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - November 7th, 2016
Dear Friends:

I’ve been readjusting to the New York jazz lifestyle after my couple weeks abroad.  New York jazz life is a funny place – it’s kind of a time vacuum.  Here in our entrenched jazz life time takes on another dimension - life is lived in sets, not minutes – early set, main show, after-hours.  Weeks and months pass swiftly by and events pass so quickly that they hardly register.  But if you can take the time to leave the city to feel the pulse elsewhere it becomes so clear how different jazz life is.  I routinely see musicians leave for 6 months at a time and then return and the bar regulars hardly blink their eyes and don’t even know anyone’s been gone.  When I’m away I’ll often have anxiety dreams – fearful nightmares where something terrible happens at the club and everything is in disarray.  I’ll wake disturbed, sweating.  But as soon as I get home and descend those stairs down into our music bunker I realize nothing has changed at all.  Nobody’s even noticed I was gone.  Two weeks away hardly translates into one chorus of “rhythm changes” – the bartenders serve their drinks, the cats high-five and talk shit about whoever’s playing and the crowd pulses in joyful abandon to the greatness of this music.  It seems as if life at Smalls is an entity all its own, and honestly, I’d never want it any other way.

We’ve been having some great results with our recent endeavor into Facebook Live.  Last week we broadcast Lage Lund’s quartet with Mark Turner and hit something like 75,000 feeds with more than 15,000 unique viewers.  The implications are staggering considering we have but 60 seats.  I’m pushing to get what we call “supporting” members of SmallsLIVE – that is to say, people who subscribe to our site in exchange for access to our audio/video archive.  Funds from subscriptions are what we use to payout to the artists and subsidize the clubs through our unique royalty share initiative.  If you’re curious about this, click this link.  Please consider supporting us with a membership.  Our goal is autonomy from our cover charge – that is to say, seeing the clubs fully supported from subscriptions from our members.  It’s not impossible but it is a challenge.  If we can achieve it then we can guarantee our lovely jazz basements can continue to provide a place for artists to share their music and a place for those seeking the jazz life can enter the time-warp.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs.

Regards,

Spike
