This week (November 6) is the first UPCYCLE PROJECT, held in the Farm 8am to 1pm. We are super excited to welcome talented makers and passionate collectors to our market. We will have new food stalls and music too!
Finally we have a smoothie stall at the market. Smoothie Bay has been operating a couple weeks now and has the most incredible green smoothies. They are placed next to Phoenix Family cafe. Two of our farmers: Coochin and Sandy Creek have joined forces to have a mega farm stall in the west side of the market. They now have all the best locally farmed produce. Come and say hi to David and Julia; and Les and Marji.
Christmas is coming soon, this year Christmas Day is on a Sunday so we will be having our market on the Saturday instead. Its never too early to think about Christmas Lunch. You can place your turkey order with Ewart from GreenAg already. His stall is up near Coochin Farms / Sandy Creek. For more market information

Good News… The Brisbane City Council has recently updated its guidelines to allow residents to plant out their verge. Previously, home owners have actually been fined for planting the council verge in front of their fences, but now we are being encouraged to spread out into the verge.

Verge planting has been widespread for people trying to increase the value of their property for decades and recently the edible verge garden has also gained popularity through local action. Finally the Brisbane City Council has caught up and we can take advantage of the extra space.

Of course there are a few rules. We need to keep 1.2m for pedestrians and not impede line of sight for traffic. We also can’t create raised garden beds – but who decided that was the best way to garden anyway – Brisbane’s suburbs are built on some really good soil, let’s take advantage of it!

Some tips from experienced verge gardeners:

* Talk to your neighbours. Working together will benefit not just greater space and relationships but also greater security (for your home as well as your children).

* Be prepared to share… experienced verge planters will tell you not to plant out your rare varieties lest they disappear, but there is also the opportunity to let everyone know that you are happy to share. Herbs are cheap and easy to grow and benefit from regular “pruning”.

* Fixed irrigation is not allowed so stick to the tough plants – there are plenty. Rosemary, lavender and geraniums are all tough and provide a sensory experience for people passing by. Sweet potato, Yacon, Egyptian Spinach and Madagascar Bean are all tough, edible and not susceptible to theft.

* Provide a path for pollinators and beneficial insects. There are many flowers, natives and herbs that attract good bugs to your garden. Why not create a good bug highway into your garden and the rest of the neighbourhood.

* Caring for both people and the earth, stay away from thorns, poisons and trip hazards. Ensure that you dial before you dig and take care near roads. For a full guide and boundaries on verge gardening in Brisbane refer to the BCC Verge Guidelines and Checklist.
