A Word from Our Chair

Will fall ever arrive?  As we head into the cooler weather and then the busy holidays, please do not forget to renew your USMS Membership for 2017!

GRIN has some new initiatives for the year and we are looking forward to a great 2017! The State Meet will be held in Munster and we hope you all can attend. We are also working on Club Development around the state, have a renewed focus on swimmer fitness, are providing training scholarships for Coaches and Adult Learn to Swim instructors, and now have a new operating budget for GRIN. There may even be some new big meets!

If you haven't done so already, please take a few minutes to respond to the GRIN 2016 Membership Survey. We are really interested in the needs of our swimmers. We want to make sure your team has the tools to ensure a successful swimming experience for all.

If ever you need help with your team, your area, or your ideas, please feel free to contact any of us on the GRIN Board!

Swimmingly,
Lisa L. Brown

The 2017 GRIN State Championship Meet is Set!

The GRIN Board is thrilled to announce that the 2017 GRIN State Championship Meet will be held from April 8-9 at the Jon Jepsen Aquatic Center in Munster, Indiana.

Meet Hosts
The 2017 State Meet will be hosted by the Munster Masters Association. This diverse Masters program has approximately 60 registered members ranging in age from 21 years old to over 70.  Head Coach Matt Lee believes that you are never too old to be competitive and they are looking forward to bringing the GRIN State Meet competition to their pool. The Munster Masters Association also has a great volunteer base, enjoys hosting several Masters meets each year, and hosted the 2016 Illinois State Meet, which had over 600 swimmers. They certainly know how to run a championship meet and we are thrilled they will be our meet host for 2017!

Meet Facility
The Jon Jepsen Aquatic Center is located at Munster High School, 8808 Columbia Avenue, Munster, IN 46321.  The Aquatic Center features a beautiful 10-lane, 50-meter competition pool with moveable bulkheads to allow for separate competition and warm-up / warm-down pools. The facility also includes spacious locker rooms, offices, a large classroom, and a large open area that will feature vendors and concessions - all designed to handle the needs of a large event.

Additional details, including the order of events, registration information, and hotels, will be coming shortly. Please stay tuned, but be sure to get this great annual competition on your calendars now. We hope to see you all in Munster!

USMS Membership Renewals for 2017

Individual Registration for 2017 is Now Open
Individual USMS registration opened on November 1 and online registration is open. Membership cards can be printed immediately upon registration and cards should be brought to every practice.  If you have any questions or need help printing your card, please contact Karen Gernert.

A Word from our Fitness Chair

November (Movember) raises awareness for testicular and prostate cancer.  Approximately 10% of global cancer and deaths in men is from prostate cancer and this is the second most common form of cancer in men.  Get your screening today!

Thinking about being fitter out of the water? Consider starting a short 20-minute dryland work out before or after your swim practices.  There are unlimited possibilities to your program and dryland doesn't have to be complicated. Try this for starters: 3 reps of 10 push-ups followed by jumping jacks for 1 minute, then 10 spider lunges follow by jumping jacks for 1 minute, and finish up wth 10 jumping lunges followed by jumping jacks for I minute.

And, don't forget to fuel your workouts. For those early morning swim practices, aim for a snack that combines carbs and protein.

If there are topics you are curious about, please email Ron.
