Candy Corndrawing Contest Winner Announced

We hope you had time to stop by this year for our annual Homecoming meet and greet on the patio. This year we had over 78 guesses from students, faculty and staff for our candy corn game. Tanner, a student in the School of Nursing, won the whole caboodle with a guess of 701! (The answer was 707.) Stop by next year while you wait for the Gurney Derby to test your skill, get some popcorn, and meet your friendly neighborhood librarians.

Pet Therapy Study Break for Finals!

Finals are coming up and so is our Pet Therapy Study Break! The dogs are back in town, and maybe a rat named Jane, to boot. Take a break and de-stress with our Pet Therapy dogs from Hand in Paw during finals week. They are scheduled to come visit our students and staff at Sterne Library on Thursday, December 8th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Their second visit will be at Lister Hill Library on Friday, December 9th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Come and visit our furry friends!

UAB Libraries Celebrates Opening the Vault: the Black Freedom Struggle and the NAACP Papers

On October 20th, UAB Libraries presented "Opening the Vault: the Black Freedom Struggle and the NAACP Papers," a reception introducing two of our newest acquisitions, major databases filled with primary resources related to the NAACP and the history of the African American Civil Rights Movement. Following brief demonstrations of the databases, NAACP Papers and The Black Freedom Struggle in the 20th Century, Dr. Ray Watts and Dean John Meador spoke about the importance of such resources and the UAB Libraries to the community and to UAB. We look forward to further opportunities to collaborate with Dr. Watts, the UAB Administration, and UAB Alumni on ways to increase scholarly content available to the UAB community.

Toole Family Donation on Display in Historical Collections

Come see the new display in Historical Collections on the 3rd floor of Lister Hill Library, featuring a historically significant collection documenting four generations of physicians of the Toole family of Talladega, Alabama. This donation, which includes a large collection of Civil War related material, was recently given by Dr. Arthur F. Toole, III, and is held in the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, Reynolds-Finley Historical Library and UAB Archives. The display incorporates a mixture of artifacts, books and archival material representing the breadth of the valuable Toole donation. Visitors can view the display between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Building Updates

Lister Hill Library

Please pardon our progress as the renovations on the 1st floor of Lister Hill Library continue. Coming soon are new and improved study rooms. What’s available now? New dog bone computer carrels with adjustable lights and shades for privacy and glare-reduction.

Also, visit us at the new HUB desk for circulation and information requests.

Mervyn H. Sterne Library
Construction crews continue to re-shape part of Sterne Library's 2nd floor to accommodate the INTO UAB program offices and classrooms. The print journal collection (from the year 2000 to present) is available on the 2nd floor, as are the juvenile and K-12 textbook collections. The print journals from prior to 2000 are being organized and shelved off-site. Until such time as they are ready for our use, you may request articles from those volumes through Interlibrary Loan. As emptied shelving is being removed from the 2nd floor, we are re-assembling tables and filling up the large open space left behind. By mid-November we will have added 23 more tables, and 92 more seats that we had to move to storage when construction began over the summer...well in advance of final exams!
