PhD opportunities
A number of imaging-related PhD positions with connections to SINAPSE research are currently open. The EASTBIO Doctoral Training Partnership includes studentship projects available at Aberdeen and at St Andrews. Other studentship projects are available through the MVLS Doctoral Training Programme at Glasgow.

Date for your diary: the 2017 SINAPSE Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow on Friday, 16 June 2017.
In response to feedback from the 2016 ASM, the 2017 ASM programme is planned to include parallel sessions on the following themes:
- Methodology and image analysis
- Psychology and psychiatry
- Molecular imaging
- Clinical applications
Proffered talks and poster presentations will be sought to help fill those sessions with the latest research from SINAPSE members and to stimulate lively discussion, so start planning ahead for abstract submissions! More details to follow.

Image of the Month: Whole body MRA

Our November Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Jonathan Weir-McCall and Prof Graeme Houston, illustrates the use of whole body magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for systematic quantification of the extent of atheromatous disease within the arteries of the entire body in a single examination.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Shaun Stone

At the start of this year, SINAPSE awarded funding for PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The Member Profile section of our newsletter is currently being used to introduce the incoming students.

|
Shaun R. Stone has recently started his PhD studentship at the University of Aberdeen where his project is titled 'Prediction Models of Dementia Risk from Brain MR Images and Proxies of Cognitive Reserve' with Prof Alison Murray and Dr Roger Staff (with co-supervision from Prof Joanna Wardlaw and Prof Craig Ritchie at the University of Edinburgh), funded by SINAPSE and IXICO. The project aims to identify the most important life-course factors and brain biomarkers that influence differences in cognitive reserve and cognitive resilience. These proxies of cognitive decline will then be incorporated into machine learning algorithms for automatic detection and classification of dementia risk from a brain scan. Providing these models are accurate in predicting patient pathology, these approaches will be extremely useful for both clinical/pharmaceutical trials and for earlier diagnosis of patients with dementia. Shaun completed his BSc degree in Psychology with Neuroscience, and MSc degree in Neuroimaging, at Bangor University, North Wales - where he gained experience using a range of neuroimaging techniques. Shaun continues to learn, using his neuro-background to transfer into a medical and diagnostic imaging domain and is looking forward to his future career in research or industry, thanks to this PhD opportunity.
