Sorella Board Positions

Get involved with our dynamic group

By Sharon Martin Andersson, Club President

Sorella Cycling is opening nominations for the 2017 Board of Directors.  We have five elected positions: (1) President (2) Vice President (3) Secretary (4) Membership Director and (5) Treasurer.  We  are fortunate to have Sorellas who are interested in filling these roles, but are accepting other nominations.

The nomination period will last though November 16 at which time we will hold an official election via Survey Monkey.

If you would like to nominate yourself, or another club member, send an email to sorellacycling@gmail.com

We also have several board-appointed positions that serve Sorella Cycling, such as ride coordinator, communications, clothier, and club events, and we are seeking volunteers who might want to help in these areas.

If you want to get more involved in the club, our website lists all of the board positions. Feel free to contact a current board member for more information or e-mail us here at sorellacycling@gmail.com.

I can't say enough about the efforts of so many Sorellas who work behind the scenes to organize rides, clinics, socials, and events.  There are also sponsor relationships we maintain to bring you awesome deals as well as support our race team.  Last but not least are the beautiful Hincapie kits.  From designing to ordering to distributing this custom apparel is a huge job.  We wouldn't be able to do all this without the generous contribution of our member's time.

Introducing the Road Cyclist Development Program

New program for new road riders

We are pleased to announce a new program for Sorella Cycling. “Road Rider Development” will focus on helping new riders gain the skills and confidence they need for group  rides. Our Development Coordinator, Amy Plummer, will  act as liaison for this position. She will coordinate rides, clinics, and be the point person for any new rider who wants some assistance.

This fall (and continuing into winter 2017), the beginner rides will coincide with the Atlanta Winter Bike League riding calendar. The Atlanta Winter Bike League meets every other Saturday, and Amy is the leader of the “C” (or beginner rider) group. This is a great beginner ride, and those in the C group will become comfortable riding in double pace lines, handling their bikes in big groups, knowing how to call out directions and obstacles, and other valuable road skills. The route is flat, straight, and great for any rider. (For more information about the Atlanta Winter Bike League, visit their website or see the reference below, in the "rides" section of this newsletter. Be sure to get on their mailing list so you have all of the details.)

We invite you to contact Amy if you are interested in participating in the Atlanta Winter Bike League “C” group road series.  And be on the lookout for special events and posts on Facebook to inform you of additional beginner focused activities.

Free Mountain Bike Clinic

Lake Allatoona on 11/19 @10 am

Join super Sorellas Alexandra Martinez and Stefanie Wilmert, cat 1 mtb racers in xc and endurance racing.  Alexandra and Stefanie have been racing for over 15 years and are experienced both on and off the bike.

After the instruction Alexandra and Stefanie will lead a no-drop ride on the beautiful Alltoona trails. A mountain bike and Helmet are required.

Please RSVP on facebook or email Alexandra if you are not on Facebook at alexandramartinez1@hotmail.com

Shereese Brooks

About Me: I currently work in Human Resources and own my own T-shirt screen print business. I am single with no children. I live downtown Atlanta and I hail from Richmond, VA. I enjoy running, swimming, and making people laugh. I love to read, dance and travel also. I love all things fitness, fun and fashionable.

Road, Mountain or Cyclocross: I just started road biking to complete my upcoming Ironman 70.3.

Type of Bike I ride:  I own one road bike, Kermit (Trek Lexa).....looking to upgrade soon to something that makes that swish noise, since those bike always pass me on my races :)

Favorite Place to Ride: I haven't had the chance to ride many places yet but for now riding across the finish line at my triathlons is my favorite place to ride :)

Dream Ride: Hmmm....maybe to complete a century one day with water as a back drop....or a full ironman

Biggest Accomplishment on My Bike:  My biggest accomplishment is sticking with cycling this summer and not giving up on myself after having a hard time adjusting to cycling as a sport. I also feel accomplished to have joined such an amazing group of ladies who support me, teach me new tricks and made me over from T-shirt and leggings to a cool cycling kit.

Race Report: Turning 60

Part One ...

By Kim Nelson, Sorella Membership Director

Some people dread birthdays, especially the “big” ones. But I decided to face the Big ‘6-0’ head on. At my age I have lost too many friends and loved ones that didn’t make it to 60, so I decided to celebrate for all of them! If you race Masters then you actually look forward to moving to a new age category. And so planning 2016 began in earnest: Masters Road Nationals in May, The Death Ride in July, and if I was still alive, I would go to Austria for the World Masters Cycling Federation (WMCF) racing in August. I do love a plan.

Featured Sponsor:

Eventide Brewing was formed out of friendship and a love of good beer.  Nathan, Haley, and Geoffrey all met at Georgia Southern, and later on began to experiment with homemade pickles, mustard, cheese, and  beer. Nathan and Geoffrey’s first batch of beer was brewed on a “Mr. Beer” kit. Shortly after realizing they needed to upgrade, Nathan fabricated a three kettle brew system, which is still used to create our test brews today. Mathew joined the team a few years later after being introduced to the group through one of Haley’s close friends. The combination of everyone’s background and talents has allowed us to build this company from the ground up, become closer friends, and craft award winning beer. We are very happy to call Atlanta home and to provide this great city with offerings that will really show what “Craft” can be. To us, great doesn’t have to be complicated.

We are grateful to Eventide for their club sponsorship and for generously donating their facilities and delicious brews with us!
