King's Somaliland Partnership Newsletter
The future of health partnerships is considered in a new report, In Our Mutual Interest. Launched at THET’s conference in London, it describes eight principles which make partnership more effective. Together, these principles challenge partnerships to apply best practice across their programmes.

As one of the oldest and largest health partnerships, KSP is constantly looking to improve the quality of our work. Here are two good examples.
First, we are looking at how we can improve the experience of our volunteers. We are lucky to have had help from KCL Research Fellow,Giulia Impelluso, who produced an excellent report over the summer. A summary of her findings can be found in the presentation below. We plan to implement the main recommendations over the coming months. A second example is focusing on the quality of our teaching work. Volunteer Health Professions Education Co-Lead, Molly Fyfe, is leading a trial of peer-observation of our online teaching. We hope to have more to share about this pilot in early 2017.

Finally, on behalf of KSP, I’d like to say a huge thank you to our departing volunteer Muha for her incredible work (alongside Hodan) in producing this newsletter for the last two years. As well as informing us about the serious stuff, Muha has brightened up our inboxes with Somaliland culture and song. Muha, you have demonstrated the 9th principle of partnership, which is to enjoy work and have fun! We wish you all the best in your future studies.

Over the summer, KCL Resarch Fellow, Giulia Impelluso, carried out some research to help us improve the Somaliland volunteer experience. She presented her findings to volunteer leads earlier this month (click image above for more) and we will be prioritising taking forward some of the key recommendations.

Dr Nick Bass, Director of Medical Education East London NHS Foundation Trust, and Dr Jibril Handuleh, Clinical Lecturer Amoud University Somaliland, prepared a presentation for the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) 2016 Conference. The presentation was on King’s psychiatric emergencies training course, co-delivered on MedicineAfrica, earlier this year. The organisers said this was one of the most important sessions at the 3,500 delegate-strong conference, generating much excitement and discussion and an invitation to get fast-tracked for publication. We will update in future newsletters. Great work, Nick and Jibril!
