As a preview, we invite you to feast your eyes on Terrance Guardipee’s ledger art piece Running Eagle. This work, which will be featured in our live auction, is about the female warrior Running Eagle- one very few female Blackfeet war chiefs. She is still revered as a protector and is high ranking in Blackfeet spiritual belief system, connected to the Creator and to Mother Moon where she receives her power.
Ledger art was practiced 1860’s-1920’s, primarily by Plains Indians and stems from traditional Plains hide painting. At this time supplies of ledger books came from traders, government agents, missionaries, and military officers, along with pencils, ink fountain pens, crayons, and watercolor paints. A revival of ledger art began in the 1960s and 1970s, with Terrance Guardipee being one of the first Native artists to bring back the tradition.
