Welcome to the CANI E-Zine

As the cold weather sets in and the days get shorter people in many sports stop for the winter but thankfully this is just the start of a a new season for canoeing.

The rivers are starting to flow, the seas are getting rough, coaching and leadership courses are in full swing and clubs are offering all kinds of sessions both in the pool and outside.

September / October has been a great start to the season with the Greenland Games, the Liffey Descent, Crana Fest, Paddle4Sport events and much more. There are lots more events to come this year including the Share slalom race, The Mourne Race and the Turkey Paddle.

As always we would love to hear your stories and see your pictures of your paddling trips, send them to us or tag CANI in social media and we will share them and you will help inspire others to take part in the sport we all love.

Happy Paddling

Change in company status

CANI has been going through a legal review and for the past year has been making the change from an association to a limited company with charitable status. The change was completed in September and the CANI council members became non executive directors of CANI forming the new board. There will be no impact to CANI members or the running of the business. The change in company status has also enabled the financial year to be changed to align with funders cycles as the majority of CANI’s income comes from grants. The CANI financial year will now run from the 1st April to the 31st March which means that the AGM will change also. The 2017 AGM will be held in May (date and venue to be confirmed).

CANI Turkey Paddles 27th Dec

You are all invited to take part in the CANI Turkey Paddles which will be at two venues; One venue will be the Newry Canal and the other venue will be the Lower Bann. After all your festive eating, why not come and join us for a leisurely paddle to burn off all the turkey and brussels sprouts. Details on the CANI Turkey Paddles will be on the CANI website soon, but please save the date to your diary.

Membership fee increase

The CANI Board reviewed the membership fees and agreed that the majority of the 2016 fees should not change. There will be a slight increase on the junior affiliate fee from £5 - £6 and the adult affiliate fee from £8 to £10. These increases will come into effect from the 1st January.

Cranafest 2016

Ireland’s largest white water kayaking event Crana Fest was back again this year even bigger and better. With over 450 participants travelling from far and wide to take part in the weekend it made for an action packed weekend.

Adrian had brought together over 50 coaches including some of Ireland’s top white water coaches, they spent the weekend delivering coaching sessions and river trips and all who took part definitely came away having learnt something. Crana is all about the competitions and this year it didn’t disappoint, Adrian had put a lot of work into the night race with a new improved “Paddles Up” approach which proved challenge to everyone and provided quite a spectacle for the crowd.

With over 100 people taking part in the night race it shows just how strong the white water community is in Ireland. Throughout the weekend it was amazing to see the number of junior paddlers present from beginners to advanced showing the hard work that all the clubs across Ireland have been putting into getting kids into paddlesport.

If you missed this year’s Crana Fest make sure to keep an eye out for next year’s date it’s not to be missed.

Performance Updates

Performance News

October has been a busy month for the CANI Performance Programme staff and athletes. Members of the Surf Programme competed for Northern Ireland at the Home Internationals and Irish Open whilst members of the Slalom Programme competed for Northern Ireland at the Pan Celtic race in Teesside and the Sprint Programme has moved to a new home.

Slalom

We open with Matt's report on the recent Junior and U23 European Championships in Slovenia. Northern Irish athletes have shown again that they have the potential to compete at an international level and we can’t wait to see how they get on next year.

Continuing into October CANI Slalom Squad members Alistair McCreery, Jake Cochrane, Elliott Davidson, Patrick Creber, Kirsten Eatock and Kiera Davidson made their way from around the country to the white water course at Teesside in preparation for the last Pan Celtic Race of the season. The course designers set a challenging course for the 250 competitors to test their physical and technical abilities. The CANI squad members all raced hard against some stiff competition from the other Home Nations, congratulations go to Jake Cochrane who finished in a top 10 position.

Members of the Slalom Squad travelled to Buncrana during the weekend of the 22/23 for the annual Cranafest River Festival. As Ireland’s premier white water event the slalom is always a highly contested competition. To find out how they got on check back in for the next e-zine.

With the close of the season CANI Slalom Squad members have now transitioned into winter training and looking ahead to next year. This is a key period to focus on technical and physical adaptations that will be needed to compete next season.

Sprint

Last months regatta weekend at Nottingham showed some great performances from the squad.  As they move into the winter training phase they've provided a report looking back at the event.

Congratulations to Sprint Squad member Zoe Thompson who recently travelled back to Nottingham to take part in the British Canoeing Sprint Profiling Day. Zoe left early Friday morning and took the Ferry over to Nottingham in preparation for two days of intense on and off water testing by British Canoeing Staff. Zoe pushed herself hard over the two days and received some very positive feedback to help shape her winter training.

The CANI Sprint programme has a new home at Belfast Boat Club. We are delighted to announce this partnership and hope that the facilities available at Belfast Boat Club will help drive forward the Sprint Programme.

Sprint Squad members are now focused firmly on the key technical and physical adaptations they need to make to compete next season.

Surf
At the beginning of October Surf Squad members had the opportunity to compete for Northern Ireland at the Home Internationals in Portrush. Despite the surf being small everyone pushed themselves hard to get the most out of each wave and try and score big. With some standout performances from Northern Ireland athletes they managed to secure a third place finish, a positive results in preparation for next year’s World Championships. Full results from the event can be found here.

After the Home Internationals the Surf athletes headed west to compete in the Irish Open which was to be held at Easkey, Sligo. With some big waves forecast and an international field assembled the stage was set for a fantastic event. To find out how they got on check back in for the next e-zine.
