Daventry Road Gas Pipe Replacement
We’ve been in contact with National Grid who inform us that the 4-way lights at the junction of Daventry Road, Queen Isabels Avenue & Cecily Road will be removed early in the week.

Unfortunately they’re being relocated to the junction of Daventry Road, Quinton Road & Quinton Park for the next 4 weeks.

However none of this has been confirmed by the Road Works report that Roger receives each week. We’ll find out soon enough who is right.

New Tiverton School Update
The "New Tiverton Delivery Team" for Coventry City Council has promised to give us regular updates on this project. The team consists of Council Officers, the designers and also the builders. We received the first two updates on 26th October:

Weekly update:  Friday 28th October 2016
The pre-start demolition meeting took place on 26th October with City Council officers and Farrans, the main contractor.  Demolition will take place later next month and is likely to last until Christmas.

Discussions have also taken place with British Gas who has been carrying out infrastructure improvements in the area.  Repairs to local pavements and roadways will be taking place over the next week.

During the next couple of weeks, on behalf of the council as part of the new school build, dilapidation photographs will be taken to record the current state of repair of the local roads kerbs and pavements.

Weekly update:  Friday 21st October 2016
Planning consent for the new Tiverton School on the former Alice Steven’s site was approved on 18th October 2016.

Details are available on the City Council’s planning portal
The decision notice includes all the conditions attached to the approval.

The demolition of the former Alice Steven’s building has been delayed due to the discovery of a protected species.  An application will be submitted to Natural England so that arrangements can be made to enable the premises to be demolished. Demolition will hopefully commence in November 2016.

Whitley residents Doug & Rod have an article in the Coventry Observer newspaper about their concerns for this project. Click on page 5. To enlarge the page: if using a PC then double click the page, for tablets & smart phones enlarge in your normal way.

Landscaping Work at the JLR Bridge
Residents continue to ask when the landscaping work at the JLR Bridge will be undertaken.
Response from Ian Lewis, Senior Programme Manager:
The landscaping items are to be delivered by a different contractor as we removed the works from the main scheme for contractual reasons.
It was hoped to undertake landscaping works during the latter part of July this year, however other works prevented us from doing so. With the seasonal change now upon us any planting we would undertake would be at risk of not surviving the coming winter so we would look to plant early in the new year, of course subject to weather.

Whitley Residents’ Meeting 2nd November at 7pm
The next Whitley Residents’ meeting will take place on 2nd November at 7pm at the Whitley Community Centre.
Agenda:
  • Tiverton School
  • Severn Trent Site
  • Whitley Business Park & JLR issues
Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
Volunteers are still being sought to enable the library to be kept open. The next volunteers’ meeting is on Monday 7th November at 3pm, when officers from Library Services and representatives from Cheylesmore Community Centre will be in attendance to answer some of our questions.

The Cheylesmore Community Centre is in the final phases of completing their business plan proposal for taking over the library & requesting funding for the building work that is required to integrate the library into the centre.

However nothing can be decided until the consultation process for all Coventry libraries is complete & approved by Cabinet, which is in February.

If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please email cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

Overhanging Trees in Carnegie Close
Hi Roger,
We would like to thank you for getting the trees and holly trimmed in Carnegie Close. I was surprised to see it was Council Workers and not the Chace that did the work.

Revocation of Left Turn at Whitley Junction
A resident asked who was going to pay for the changes required as a result of the revocation order.

Response from Ian Lewis, Senior Programme Manager:
The left turn revocation is as a result of a scheme review based on the current situation at this junction.
With all major schemes we hold what is known as a retention pot of money which allows us to cover post scheme costs to rectify items such as this, changes to signs, repairs and the like. Any works relating to the revocation order would come from this.

Salt Bin on Buckfast Close
Roger received this email from a concerned relative of a Buckfast Close resident:
Buckfast Close is a steep hill & when icy / snowy weather arrives, the conditions in the road are treacherous. The majority of the residents are unable to drive their cars out of the road as they are unable to obtain traction on the roads with such an incline.

Recent winters prior to the salt box being placed had meant that weekly bin collections were cancelled or delayed & emergency service vehicles were unable to turn around in the street / go back up the hill. Ambulances ended up having to drive over the verge at the bottom of the road & attempt to join Leaf Lane.

With an ageing residency in Buckfast Close, I am writing to ask you to reconsider the withdrawal of the salt bin to ensure the residents are able to use their vehicles in the harsh weather likely over winter & most importantly, that emergency vehicles can safely drive in to and out of the close.

This is the response received from Peter Ullah, Highways Operations Manager:
Thank you for your enquiry. We have introduced a very prescriptive scoring system since this grit bin was originally provided and unfortunately this location falls short of the new guidelines.

Please note that grit bins at the nearby Exminster Road/Leaf Lane junction and Porlock Close (near Leaf Lane) are both staying and remain accessible to your parents. Our original map shows the Porlock Close bin down for removal, but this was an error in the colour coding.

For reference, when we spread salt on the carriageway it is typically spread at 10g/m2 which means that an amount equivalent to a 1kg bag of sugar is sufficient to cover 100m2 of footway/road. It is not necessary to transport large quantities of salt from one road to another when required.

I am sorry I am unable to grant your request on this occasion.

Cecily Road not Quinton Park
A resident queried a road closure from last week’s update - Quinton Park (jct of Daventry Road to jct of Cecily Road) until 13th January 2017. Reason BT/ Conley Utilities works

Quinton Park runs from Daventry road to Woodstock road. Could you please confirm what is to be closed?

Response from Alex Moore, Network Co-ordinator:
The road in question should be Cecily Road, there was a discrepancy within the application paperwork but that has now been amended. I apologise for the confusion this has caused.

For clarification, please see the above plan.

However the Cecily Road closure notification has not been included in this week’s roadworks list from the council, so Roger is checking again.

Friends of Baginton Fields – ‘Naked Ambition’ Calendar
Read the ITV news article
Read the Coventry Telegraph article
Roger showed his support for this venture with a letter to the Coventry Telegraph:
In regards to the article ‘Naked Ambition’, promoting the new calendar produced in support of the Friends of Baginton Fields.

A number of residents and myself submitted both verbal and written statements to the recent inquiry on the Coventry Local Plan, asking for the area of Baginton Fields to be kept as it is, preserving a unique and natural facility in Coventry for all to use.

We also attended a protest outside the Council House in support of this action, highlighting its special place in the hearts of Coventry residents.

It has a unique mix of wildlife that would be a sad loss if built on for business use.
I would encourage those who care, to support the group by purchasing one of their newly released calendars, details of which can be found on their
facebook page.

Sad Loss of Community Champion
It is with sadness that we announce the passing away of Reg Kimber, founder member of Whitley History Group and a lifetime Coventrian.

Hazel Noonan knew Reg for over 35 years & she sent us this:
"Memories of Reg and his community involvement in Whitley will live on for many years. His tireless work involvement with many groups and organisations from football clubs to being a school governor. His knowledge of the local area saw him writing books and with his friend starting and running the Whitley History Group. Whitley has lost a valued friend who will be greatly missed."

Civilian Communal Grave Service
Often forgotten on Remembrance Sunday is the Civilian Communal Grave Service at London Road Cemetery.

It takes place at 3pm at the memorial which is located in the new part of the cemetery which is to the south of the railway line.

The mass grave is the resting place of 808 citizens of Coventry who died during the air raids. The Lord Mayor and visiting dignitaries will be in attendance and the service will be conducted by the minister of Holy Trinity Church.

A Plea from West Midlands Police
During the past few weeks the south side of the City has seen a significant rise in vehicle crime, the main offence effecting your area is THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE.

This is overwhelmingly due to opportunistic thieves roaming the area and trying car door handles looking for, and finding, insecure vehicles.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us to help you.

SIMPLE TIPS!!!
Ensure your vehicle is locked, even if the vehicle has been locked with a key fob – Double check!!!
Do not leave anything on display in your vehicle – Not even small amounts of loose change.
Do not leave satnav/mobile phone holders stuck to the windscreen – It makes offenders think that there may be something of value left in the vehicle.

Please share this message with all  of your local contacts and ask them to speak to their friends and neighbours about this.

If you see anything suspicious where you believe a crime is taking place dial 999.
If you have information to tell us dial 101.
Please do something!!!

Trading Standards issue Halloween Warning
Coventry Trading Standards is reminding parents to be vigilant and protect their children from risks associated with fancy dress costumes that they may not be aware of.
Many Halloween costumes are classified as toys, which means that the material can still be flammable although the rate of burning is controlled.
Due to this, parents and guardians are being reminded to keep their children away from open flames such as candles and bonfires - along with any other sources of ignition -  at all times.
If a child’s clothing should ever catch fire, the following is strongly advised:
  1. STOP – stop what you’re doing and stay very still.
  2. DROP – drop to the floor.
  3. ROLL – roll backwards and forwards until the flames are out
