Atkinson Commission Report
‘Monitoring Global Poverty’ 

The World Bank has published a landmark new report entitled Monitoring Global Poverty carried out by the Commission on Global Poverty chaired by Sir Anthony Atkinson. The Commission was set up in 2015 by the World Bank’s Chief Economist to advise the World Bank on “how to measure and monitor global poverty” in monetary and non-monetary domains.
 
OPHI are honoured to co-host the local launch of the Atkinson Commission Report at 3pm on 4 November 2016 at the Oxford Martin School. Registration is required and places are filling quickly. The event will also be webcast live.

UNGA Side Event “Measuring and Tackling Poverty in All its Dimensions” 

Hosted by the Government of South Africa with Seychelles and OPHI, and having 16 high level speakers including remarks by soon-to-be Nobel Laureate President Santos, this side event to the 71st United Nations General Assembly showcased how the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is being used in practice: as an poverty statistic at the national and global levels, as a diagnostic tool to make visible clustered deprivations, and as a governance tool to design and coordinate policy and to advance national plans.


MPPN Annual high-level meeting to be held in Mexico next month 

In this meeting of Ministers and Vice-ministers as well as international agencies, participants will interchange experiences on how to tackle poverty in all its dimensions, and learn from each other how to institutionalise and and use official multidimensional poverty statistics for effective policy design.

President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia is Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on the 7th October 2016. President Santos – who was present at the launch of the MPPN in Oxford, and hosted and spoke at the 2015 MPPN meeting in Cartagena – is a figure who has been taking the lead not only on peace but also on reducing poverty in all its dimensions.
 

Regional Workshop on Multidimensional Poverty in Cuba

On September 29 and 30, 2016, six countries and more than 30 national and international institutions representatives including OPHI met in Havana, Cuba, to participate in the First Regional Workshop on the Multidimensional Poverty Index´s Methodology. In the rich exchange that ensued, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Mexico all shared openly how they had designed their official national MPI, and the most exciting ways they had used it in recent times. Each context is different, and Cuba again is distinctive, but each finds their own path to confronting people’s key deprivations.

OPHI at the HDCA 2016 Conference in Japan 
OPHI Director Sabina Alkire and OPHI Research Officer Christian Oldiges presented academic papers at the 2016 Human Development Capability Approach Annual Conference (September 1-3) organized by the Human Development and Capability Association and hosted by Hitotsubashi University in Tashikawa, Tokyo, Japan.
