Meet our Residents:
Sean Hovendick
Sean traveled to Azule from New York to work on his newest photo project “The Truth About Men”, which explores themes of male identity and male gender role behaviors. Sean has been keeping busy interviewing and photographing men around Madison County while here and intends to travel to many other parts of the country to continue his documentation. He’s currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Graphic + Media Design program within the Department of Art + Design at Sage College of Albany in upstate New York. You can view his work at www.seanhovendick.com
Leah Ann Culver
While Leah Ann’s primary medium is oil on canvas, she has used her residency at Azule to dive into large scale charcoal portraits on toned tanned paper. “My interest in portraits comes from the desire to connect intimately with other people, in which I struggle with in my day to day. The growing epidemic of loneliness in such a "connected" world is the primary focus in my current work. I hope to create work that explores different cultures, ages, and social economic backgrounds in such a way that the viewer feels more connected to a type of person in which they wouldstruggle with otherwise. I feel it is my obligation as an artist to reconnect people with one another and point out the deeper connection we all share in this world, as one unit, one human family.”

AZULE Portrait Project
Hundreds of these portraits are now on canvas and ready for you to sign.
The AZULE PORTRAIT PROJECT
is for us a way to parallel the continuity that Camille has shown in her building Azule - the place. Representing you, participants to the Fall event, and asking you to sign and add a memory or thought to your picture is deepening your and our relationship to Azule in Bluff, Hot Springs, Madison County, North Carolina...
